How this instrument works
An aspect ratio is a rectangle's width measured against its height, stripped down to the smallest whole numbers that describe the same shape. A 1920×1080 frame and a 3840×2160 frame look identically proportioned once you divide each pair by its own greatest common divisor (GCD), even though one has four times the pixels of the other — that reduction is exactly what turns an arbitrary resolution into a recognisable name like 16:9.
16:9 is the standard widescreen ratio for video and television. It replaced 4:3 as the default broadcast shape during the transition to HDTV, and it's now the default aspect ratio for streaming platforms, YouTube uploads, most laptop and monitor panels, and digital cinema cameras shooting for television and web delivery.
The most common 16:9 resolutions form a clean family: 1280×720 (HD, '720p'), 1920×1080 (Full HD, '1080p'), 3840×2160 (4K UHD, exactly four times the pixel count of 1080p) and 7680×4320 (8K). Because each one is a whole-number multiple of the others, footage shot at one tier scales cleanly to any other in the family without distorting the frame.

Worked example — Full HD at 1920×1080
Enter 1920 into Width (px) and 1080 into Height (px) — the pixel grid of a Full HD / 1080p video frame. The greatest common divisor of 1920 and 1080 is 120, so dividing both by 120 gives a ratio width of 16 and a ratio height of 9. Simplified ratio reads 16:9.
That's an exact reduction, with no rounding involved. The same shape holds across the family: 1280×720 also reduces to 16:9 (GCD 80), and 3840×2160 — 4K UHD, exactly four times the pixel count of 1080p — reduces to 16:9 as well (GCD 240), which is why footage shot in one of these resolutions scales cleanly to any other.

Why is 16:9 the standard aspect ratio for video and TV?
16:9 was adopted as the international HDTV standard during the shift from analog to digital broadcast, replacing the older 4:3 'fullscreen' shape used by standard-definition television. Its wider frame better matches how film and cinema had already been shot for decades, and once broadcasters, camera makers and display manufacturers standardised on it, streaming video and computer monitors followed the same shape.
What resolutions count as 16:9?
Any pixel grid that reduces to 16:9 when divided by its greatest common divisor. The common tiers are 1280×720 (720p), 1920×1080 (1080p/Full HD), 2560×1440 (1440p/QHD), 3840×2160 (4K UHD) and 7680×4320 (8K) — each a whole-number multiple of 1280×720, so all four share the identical 16:9 shape.
Is 4K the same aspect ratio as 1080p?
Yes, when it's 3840×2160 'UHD' 4K, which is exactly four times the pixel count of 1920×1080 at the same 16:9 ratio — this instrument reduces both to 16:9. Cinema 4K (4096×2160) is a slightly different, wider ratio used mainly in digital cinema projection, so not every resolution labelled '4K' is strictly 16:9.
How is 16:9 different from 16:10?
Both start with a width of 16 parts, but 16:9 is wider relative to its height than 16:10 — a 16:9 frame is shorter top-to-bottom for the same width. 16:9 dominates video and TV, while 16:10 (which reduces to 8:5) is more common on laptop and monitor panels built for productivity work, where the extra vertical space helps with documents and code.
Why does the calculator show 16:9 instead of a decimal like 1.78?
A whole-number ratio like 16:9 is what video and display specifications actually use, and it's easier to recognise and compare than a decimal such as 1.777... . The instrument's greatest-common-divisor method always returns this exact whole-number form rather than an approximation, so the result matches industry naming directly.
