How this instrument works
Adjusted age, also called corrected age, accounts for how early a baby was born when judging developmental milestones. A baby born at 32 weeks' gestation has had 8 fewer weeks in the womb than one born at full term. Measuring that baby's rolling, sitting, or walking against a full-term peer from the same birth date compares two children with genuinely different amounts of developmental time behind them. The correction instead starts the clock from the due date, not the birth date.
The arithmetic runs in two steps. First, find how many weeks early the baby arrived by subtracting gestational age at birth from 40. Second, subtract that number from the baby's current chronological age, counted from the actual birth date. A baby born at full term needs no correction at all, since 40 minus 40 leaves nothing to subtract.
The American Academy of Pediatrics, through its HealthyChildren.org resource, and March of Dimes both describe using this correction for milestone tracking through roughly the first two years of life. Beyond that window, the gap between the corrected figure and the calendar count generally narrows, and most guidance drops the distinction. A baby born at full term, 40 weeks' gestation, needs no correction: 40 minus 40 leaves nothing to subtract. At a chronological count of 12 weeks, the corrected figure is also 12 weeks — identical to the calendar count, exactly as expected.
A baby born quite early, at 28 weeks' gestation, is 40 minus 28, or 12 weeks early. At a chronological count of 26 weeks, her corrected figure is 26 minus 12, equal to 14 weeks — a substantial 12-week gap between the two counts, reflecting how significant the prematurity was.
Questions
What does adjusted age actually mean?
It is the age a premature baby would be if counted from their original due date instead of their actual birth date. The correction subtracts however many weeks early a baby arrived from the calendar count since birth, giving a fairer baseline for judging when milestones like rolling over or babbling should appear.
Until what point should I use the corrected figure instead of the calendar count?

Whether a baby's development falls within a typical range for their corrected timeline is a clinical judgment that depends on the specific milestone, the individual child, and other health factors a pediatrician evaluates directly. Use the result as context for that conversation, not as a diagnosis.
Why is 40 weeks used as the reference point for full term?
Because 40 weeks from the last menstrual period is the standard clinical definition of a full-term pregnancy, and due dates are calculated against it. Subtracting a baby's actual gestational timing at birth from 40 gives how much womb-time the pregnancy fell short, which is exactly the correction this calculator applies.
Does this correction get used for anything besides milestones?
Yes — growth measurements like length, weight, and head circumference are also typically plotted against the corrected timeline rather than the birth-date count, at least through the first couple of years, since early physical growth follows a similar catch-up pattern to developmental milestones. Standard growth charts assume a full-term start, so plotting a premature infant's raw numbers without the correction can make normal catch-up growth look like a problem, or mask an actual one.
What if the due date itself was uncertain?
Then the correction inherits that uncertainty — dating from an early ultrasound is generally accurate to within a few days, while an estimate based only on the last menstrual period can be off by more than a week in either direction. Clinicians typically use the most reliable dating available at delivery and record it in the chart, since it anchors the whole calculation.
