How this instrument works
'State your age in years, months and days' is a specific, calendar-accurate request, distinct from a single rounded number. It means: count whole years from the birth date, then whole months from there, then whatever days are left over — the same cascading subtraction you'd do on paper, borrowing a day from the month column and a month from the year column exactly as long subtraction requires.
This breakdown shows up on documentation that wants precision rather than a headline number — affidavits, insurance applications, some visa and immigration forms, and any record that needs an age stated to the day rather than rounded to the nearest year. It's calendar-true rather than arithmetically smooth: because months are different lengths, the 'months' figure for the same birth date can be as low as 0 or as high as 11 depending on exactly which date you check against.

Worked example — born 15 June 1990, checked on their 36th birthday
Enter 15 June 1990 as the date of birth and 15 June 2026 as the as-of date. The breakdown reads 36 years, 0 months, 0 days — because the as-of date lands exactly on the anniversary of the birth date, the months and days columns both come out at zero with nothing left over.
Check one day later, 16 June 2026, instead, and the reading becomes 36 years, 0 months, 1 day — the extra day shows up immediately in the days column without touching the years or months, which is exactly the calendar-borrowing behaviour this format is built to show.
Questions
Why are the months and days both zero in the example?
Because the as-of date falls exactly on the birth date's anniversary — 15 June to 15 June — so the years count rolls over cleanly with nothing left in the months or days columns. Most date pairs won't line up this neatly; typically the months and days both carry a nonzero remainder.
How is this different from the main Age Calculator?
The math is identical — the same civil-calendar cascade — but the full Age Calculator additionally reports total days lived, total weeks, and a countdown to the next birthday. This instrument reports just the years/months/days breakdown, for when that's the only field a form or record needs.
Why does the months figure sometimes read as high as 11?
Because months only roll over into a full year once the exact anniversary date has passed. Right before a birthday, the months column can sit at 11 — eleven twelfths of the way to the next full year — and then reset to 0 the moment the anniversary lands.
Does this handle a 29 February birth date?
Yes — in non-leap years the 29 February anniversary is treated as landing on 1 March for the purposes of this breakdown, the same convention used throughout this site's age instruments.
What if I only need the total number of days, not the breakdown?
Use Age in Days for a single running total, or Age in Weeks for the same span in complete weeks — both use the identical underlying date arithmetic, just reported as one number instead of three.
