How this instrument works

Most everyday uses of 'age' want exactly one whole number: the count of full birthday anniversaries someone has reached. That's a narrower question than a full age breakdown — it throws away the months-and-days remainder and keeps only the completed years, which is what a form field, an eligibility rule, or a simple 'how old is X' question is usually really asking.

A year only counts once the birthday has actually happened. Someone born 20 May, checked the day before that date in a given year, is still one year younger than they'd be the next day — the birthday hasn't landed yet, even though the calendar year has technically turned over. This instrument applies that same has-the-birthday-happened rule on the civil (Gregorian) calendar, so it agrees with how age is counted for things like voting eligibility, drinking-age thresholds, or retirement-age cutoffs.

A birthday only counts toward the total once it has actually occurred on or before the as-of date — reaching the birth month and day isn't enough on its own if the exact day hasn't arrived yet.

Worked example — born 15 June 1990, checked on their 36th birthday

Enter 15 June 1990 as the date of birth and 15 June 2026 as the as-of date — the birthday itself. Age — full years reads 36, because the 15 June anniversary has landed exactly on the as-of date, completing the 36th full year.

Check the same date of birth one day earlier, 14 June 2026, instead, and the reading drops to 35: the 36th birthday hasn't happened yet, so only 35 full years are complete.

Questions

Why does my age in years sometimes feel one behind what I expect?

Because a year isn't credited until the actual birthday has passed. If today is a few days before your birthday, the full-years figure is still counting last year's anniversary as the most recent one you've reached — it ticks over the moment the birthday lands, not before.

Is this the same number a driver's license or voting-age check would use?

Yes — eligibility ages almost always mean 'how many birthdays have passed,' which is exactly what this instrument reports. It won't credit an age until the birthday has actually occurred on the calendar.

What happened to the months and days?

Can I check someone's age in years on a future date?

Yes — set the second field to any date on or after the birth date, including future ones, to see how many full years old someone will be by then.

Does this handle a 29 February birth date correctly?

Yes. In years that aren't leap years, a 29 February birthday is treated as reached on 1 March for the purposes of counting a completed year, matching the convention used across this site's age instruments.
