How this instrument works

The AP Biology exam has two sections, weighted equally: 60 multiple-choice questions and a free-response section scored out of 36 points. Because the two sections use different point scales, they're first converted onto a common composite scale before being combined — the free-response raw score is multiplied by 60/36 so that a perfect score on either section contributes the same 60 points to a 120-point composite.

Once every year's exam is administered, the College Board sets composite-score cutoffs for each of the five AP scores (1 through 5) based on that year's exam difficulty and the performance of students taking equivalent college-level biology coursework — this is why the same raw score can occasionally translate to a slightly different AP score across different years. This instrument uses a commonly published estimate of those cutoffs (93 for a 5, 74 for a 4, 51 for a 3, and 28 for a 2), which tracks closely with typical released conversion tables but is not the College Board's own official scale for any specific year's exam.

An AP score of 5 is generally described as 'extremely well qualified,' 4 as 'well qualified,' and 3 as 'qualified' — many colleges award credit or placement for a 3 or higher, though the exact policy varies by institution and even by department, so a 3 at one school might earn credit while the same score earns nothing at another.

Worked example — MCQ 45, FRQ 24

A student scores 45 out of 60 on multiple-choice and 24 out of 36 on free-response. Composite = 45 + 24 x (60/36) = 45 + 40 = 85 points out of a possible 120. Because 85 falls between the 74 cutoff for a 4 and the 93 cutoff for a 5, the estimated AP score is 4 ('well qualified').

This same student would need a composite of 93 or higher to reach a 5 — roughly 8 more raw points spread across both sections, for instance improving the free-response score from 24 to about 29 while holding multiple-choice steady, or a smaller improvement split across both sections.

How is the AP Biology composite score calculated?

The two biggest reasons are cutoff variation (the real cutoffs shift slightly year to year based on exam difficulty, while this tool uses one fixed, commonly cited estimate) and free-response scoring subjectivity (your FRQ raw score itself comes from human graders applying a detailed rubric, and this calculator can't verify that scoring — it only converts a raw score you already have into a composite and estimated AP score). Treat the output as a well-informed estimate for practice exams or self-checking, not an official result.

Does a stronger multiple-choice or free-response score matter more for my AP score?

Neither section is weighted more heavily in the composite formula itself — a raw point gained on MCQ (worth 1 composite point) and a raw point gained on FRQ (worth 60/36 ≈ 1.67 composite points) don't convert one-to-one, but the sections are designed so a perfect score on either contributes the same maximum 60 points. In practice, whichever section you're currently weaker in usually offers more room for a marginal-point improvement to move your composite, simply because a low raw score has more headroom to climb than an already-high one.
