How this instrument works
The American Academy of Pediatrics' HealthyChildren.org gives a simple weight-based starting point: a typical full-term baby takes in about 2.5 ounces of formula a day for every pound of body weight. Multiply the two together and that's the estimate — a 10-pound baby lands around 25 ounces a day, a 15-pound baby around 37.5. Above that, the same guidance adds a practical ceiling: most babies don't need more than roughly 32 ounces in 24 hours regardless of how much they weigh, so this calculator caps the raw weight-based figure there.
That ceiling exists because intake doesn't keep scaling with size forever the way a straight multiplication implies — energy needs per pound actually taper as babies get heavier, so a pure per-pound calculation would keep demanding more milk than a bigger infant genuinely requires. Capping the estimate near 32 ounces keeps the arithmetic honest at the upper end rather than projecting an ever-climbing figure for an ever-larger baby.

Worked example — 15 lb baby
A 15-pound baby: 15 × 2.5 = 37.5 ounces by the raw guideline. That's above the practical ceiling, so the recommended figure caps at 32 ounces a day rather than the full 37.5.
Compare a smaller, 10-pound baby: 10 × 2.5 = 25 ounces, comfortably under the cap, so no adjustment applies and the recommended amount stays at 25. An 8-pound baby comes out lighter still, at 8 × 2.5 = 20 ounces a day.

A brand-new newborn's stomach is tiny and intake starts much lower, often just an ounce or two per feeding, climbing gradually over the first couple of weeks rather than starting at the full weight-based estimate on day one.
My baby has reflux or isn't gaining weight well — does this still apply?
Treat it as a general reference point only. Infants with reflux, slow weight gain, prematurity, or other medical concerns often need an individualized feeding plan from their pediatrician that a general per-pound rule doesn't capture. Bring the calculator's number to that conversation rather than substituting it for one.
Does breastmilk intake follow the same per-pound rule?
No — breastfed babies' intake behaves quite differently and doesn't scale steadily with weight the way formula intake does; it settles into a fairly stable daily volume by about a month of age.
