How this instrument works
Batting strike rate is runs scored per 100 balls faced: (runs / balls faced) × 100. Where batting average measures how many runs a batter accumulates before getting out, strike rate measures how quickly — a batter can have an excellent average built on painfully slow innings, and strike rate is the number that exposes that. A strike rate of exactly 100 means one run per ball faced on average; anything meaningfully above that means the batter is regularly finding boundaries.
What counts as a 'good' strike rate depends entirely on the format being played. In five-day Test cricket, where an innings can last two full days and preserving wickets matters more than speed, a strike rate in the 50s or low 60s is often considered perfectly acceptable for a top-order batter. In a 50-over ODI, 80–100 is a solid working range. In a 20-over T20 innings, where every ball is scarce and boundaries are the currency, strike rates of 130–150 are unremarkable and the best power-hitters push well past 160.
Strike rate says nothing about how a batter got out, how many runs they scored in total, or how much their innings mattered to the match situation — a batter who smashes a quick 15 before holing out has a superb strike rate and a nearly worthless contribution. That is why commentators and analysts almost always quote strike rate alongside runs scored and batting average rather than on its own.

Worked example — 50 runs off 40 balls
Enter 50 into Runs scored and 40 into Balls faced. Strike rate = (50 / 40) × 100 = 125.00 — a fast-scoring innings typical of a strong T20 or ODI knock, well above the run-a-ball pace of 100.
The same 50 runs would tell a very different story off more or fewer balls: 50 runs from 60 balls gives a strike rate of only 83.33, a much slower innings, while 50 runs from 25 balls would give 200.00, an exceptionally fast one. The runs total alone can't distinguish between these very different innings — strike rate is what does.

What is a good batting strike rate in cricket?
It depends heavily on the format. In Test cricket, a strike rate in the 50s is generally fine for a top-order batter focused on occupying the crease; in ODIs, 80–100 is a solid working range; in T20s, 130–150 is unremarkable and the most explosive hitters routinely exceed 160. Yes. Every legal delivery a batter faces counts toward balls faced, whether it produces a run, a boundary, or nothing at all. A long run of dot balls will drag strike rate down even if the batter eventually cashes in with boundaries, which is exactly why strike rate rewards consistent scoring rather than occasional big hits.
Can a batting strike rate go above 200?
Yes, though it takes sustained boundary-hitting to do it. Scoring 100 runs off exactly 50 balls, for example, gives a strike rate of 200.00 — a run every single ball on average, which in practice means a heavy diet of fours and sixes. Strike rates well above 200 do occur in short T20 cameos, but they are rare over a full, longer innings.
Is bowling strike rate calculated the same way?
No — despite the shared name, bowling strike rate measures balls bowled per wicket taken, the opposite kind of ratio, where a lower number is better for a bowler. Batting strike rate (runs per 100 balls faced) and bowling strike rate answer completely different questions and should not be confused just because they share a name.
