This calculator applies four widely used cookout rules of thumb at once: about 0.5 lb of meat per guest, 1.5 buns or rolls per guest (accounting for seconds and the odd bunless plate), 2 drinks per guest, and 1 lb of ice per guest to keep everything cold through the afternoon.

None of these are exact science — they're the kind of round, well-tested averages caterers and party-planning guides converge on because they work across a wide range of crowds and menus. A group of teenagers or a hot afternoon with heavy drinking will eat and drink more than these baselines; a lighter potluck-style spread with lots of sides will need less meat. Does the drinks estimate assume alcohol?
