Historical records routinely give an age at death rather than a full birth date: a tombstone inscription, a probate record, an obituary, or an old census return. Genealogists reconstruct an approximate birth year from exactly that information by subtracting the recorded age from the year of death — the same simple subtraction this instrument runs.
The result is an estimate, not a certainty, because 'age at death' rounds down: someone who died a few weeks before their next birthday is recorded at one age lower than someone who died a few weeks after it, even if the two were born in the same month. That means the true birth year could land one year earlier than this calculation gives, depending on whether the birthday had passed by the date of death — a caveat every genealogy guide to this method flags.
