How this instrument works
Body mass index divides weight in kilograms by height in metres, squared, and that arithmetic never changes with sex — there is no separate men's formula, only the one ratio the CDC and every major health body apply to any adult. This page exists because plenty of men search specifically for a male-framed reading of that same number, not because the sum behaves differently once a sex box gets ticked.
The output slots into the same four bands as any other BMI reading: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 25 sits in the range the CDC calls healthy, 25 to 30 is overweight, and 30 and above is obese. Enter 80 kilograms at 1.78 metres and the figure lands at roughly 25.25 — a hair over the overweight line, exactly the kind of borderline case where the next paragraph's caveat matters most.
BMI cannot see what the mass is made of. It reads a rugby prop and a sedentary man of identical height and scale as the same number, even though one may carry two or three times the muscle of the other. That blind spot lands harder on men specifically, because men on average carry more lean mass than women at a given size — a heavily built, low-body-fat man is the person most likely to get flagged 'overweight' by this arithmetic despite having little to worry about.

Worked example — 80 kg at 1.78 m
Square 1.78 metres: 1.78 × 1.78 = 3.1684 square metres. Divide 80 kilograms by that figure: 80 ÷ 3.1684 ≈ 25.25 — a BMI just past the 25 cutoff into the overweight band, by a margin of roughly a quarter of a point.
Change only the inputs and the same arithmetic answers different questions. A 70 kilogram man at 1.75 metres squares his height to 3.0625 and divides to 22.86, inside the healthy band. A 100 kilogram man at 1.80 metres squares to 3.24 and divides to 30.86, in the obese band by the numbers alone — though, as above, the scale cannot tell whether that mass is fat or muscle.

Is there a different BMI formula for men?
No — weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared is the entire equation, and it is identical for men, women, and every adult in between. What changes on this page is the framing and the worked numbers, not a single term of the arithmetic. A 'men's BMI formula' seen elsewhere is applying the same ratio and simply labelling it for a male audience.
Why does BMI treat a muscular man as overweight?
Because the formula only sees total mass and height, not what that mass is made of, and muscle is denser than fat at the same volume. A well-built man with low body fat can carry enough lean mass to push his ratio past 25 or even 30 while carrying little of the health risk BMI is meant to flag. It is one of the clearest failure modes of this screening tool, and it affects men more often on average, since men tend to carry more muscle than women at a comparable size.
What BMI counts as healthy for a man?
The same four bands apply regardless of sex: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 up to 25 is generally considered healthy, 25 up to 30 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese, per the CDC's adult classification. A reading of 25.25, like the golden example on this page, sits barely inside the overweight band — worth a second look at trend and build rather than a single alarming label.
Should a man aim for the middle of the healthy range?
Not necessarily — the healthy band spans a wide corridor, and where a person sits inside it matters less than whether weight is trending in an intended direction. Men carrying meaningful muscle mass often sit comfortably at the upper edge of, or just past, the healthy band without any of the risk the category was built to capture. Use this figure alongside waist measurement and how clothes fit, not as a solitary verdict.
Does this calculator work for very tall or short men?
Yes — the arithmetic holds at any height, since it is just weight divided by height squared. What changes is how forgiving the categories feel: because height is squared, small measurement errors matter more at the extremes, and very tall, heavily muscled men are among the group BMI misclassifies most often. Treat any reading near a category boundary as a prompt to look closer, not a final answer.
