Producing breast milk burns calories the same way any other bodily process does, and current US dietary guidance accounts for it with a flat daily addition rather than an entirely new set of rules. For the first six months of exclusive breastfeeding, add 330 kcal a day to your baseline needs; from about seven to twelve months, that addition rises to 400 kcal a day, reflecting how milk volume and a baby's other food intake shift together with age. This calculator simply adds your own baseline — your usual maintenance calories before breastfeeding — to whichever of those two increments matches the baby's age.

These figures come from the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the joint USDA/HHS publication that sets official US nutrition recommendations, and they're notably more conservative than an older figure — roughly 450 to 500 extra kcal a day — that traces back to earlier guidance and still circulates informally. The lower, more precise 330 and 400 numbers reflect a more careful accounting of how much energy lactation itself actually costs, separate from ordinary activity, than the older round-number estimate managed.

The right figure for any individual still depends on more than the calendar. Worked example — 2000 kcal baseline, months 0-6

A baseline need of 2000 kcal a day, with a baby under six months old: add the 330 kcal increment for that age band, and 2000 + 330 = 2330 kcal a day is the recommended total.

Move to the older age band and the increment changes, not the baseline: a 1800 kcal baseline with a baby aged 7 to 12 months adds 400 instead of 330, giving 1800 + 400 = 2200. A higher 2200 kcal baseline paired with a younger, 0-6-month-old baby adds the smaller 330 kcal increment back in, for 2200 + 330 = 2530 — the same flat addition, however the baseline itself was arrived at.

Questions

Why 330 and 400 kcal instead of a single flat number?

Because the two figures come from the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which split the recommendation by the baby's age: 330 kcal a day for the first six months of exclusive breastfeeding, rising to 400 kcal a day from about seven to twelve months as milk volume and the baby's own solid-food intake shift together. Using one number for the whole first year would understate the increment later on.

Someone supplementing with formula is producing less milk overall, so the real extra energy cost of nursing itself is generally smaller than the full increment; treat this calculator's output as an upper-bound estimate in that case rather than an exact figure.
