How this instrument works
A round cake pan's usable baking area is a circle, and a circle's area scales with the square of its radius — or equivalently, the square of its diameter, since diameter is just radius doubled. That squared relationship means small changes in pan size have an outsized effect on area: a pan just one inch smaller in diameter isn't holding one inch less batter, it's holding a meaningfully smaller fraction of the original area.
This calculator applies that geometry directly to recipe scaling: it takes the ratio of your target pan's diameter to the recipe's original pan diameter, squares that ratio, and multiplies your batter amount by it. The result is a batter quantity sized to fill your actual pan to roughly the same depth the recipe intended, so bake times stay closer to what the recipe originally called for instead of needing to be re-guessed from scratch.

Adapting a 9-inch recipe to an 8-inch pan
A recipe written for a 9-inch round pan calling for 6 cups of batter is being made in an 8-inch pan instead. The area ratio is (8/9)^2 = 0.79012..., meaning the 8-inch pan holds about 79% of the 9-inch pan's area at the same depth.
Multiplying the recipe's 6 cups of batter by that ratio gives 6 x 0.79012... = 4.74 cups — noticeably less than the original 6 cups, even though the diameter only shrank by one inch. Using the full 6 cups in the smaller pan would overfill it and likely cause the batter to rise up and over the sides while baking.

Why does a 1-inch smaller pan need so much less batter?
Because area scales with the square of diameter, not diameter itself — going from a 9-inch to an 8-inch pan looks like a modest 11% shrink in diameter, but it's actually about a 21% shrink in usable area. Not directly — this calculator's area ratio is specifically the geometry of a circle (area proportional to diameter squared), which doesn't apply the same way to square or rectangular pans, where area is simply length times width. To adapt a recipe to a rectangular pan, compare the length-times-width area of both pans directly rather than using a diameter-based ratio.
What do I do with leftover batter if my pan is smaller?
Bake it separately rather than forcing it all into an undersized pan, which risks overflow and an uneven bake. A common approach is to portion the extra batter into cupcake liners or a small second pan, keeping an eye on it since smaller portions typically bake faster than the main cake and will need less time in the oven.
