How this instrument works
A calorie deficit is simply spending more energy than you take in — the gap between your Daily energy expenditure and what you eat, expressed in kcal per day. This instrument converts a weekly weight-loss goal into that daily gap, then subtracts the gap from your expenditure to give a Target daily intake you can actually plan meals around.
The conversion rests on one constant: 7700 kcal per kilogram of body fat. That figure traces back to a 1958 estimate by Max Wishnofsky, who worked out the energy released by a pound of human adipose tissue — not pure fat, but fat bundled with the water and connective tissue it is stored in — and arrived at roughly 3500 kcal per pound, which converts to about 7700 kcal per kilogram. Dietitians have used some version of that number ever since as a planning shortcut, not a measured property of any one person's body.
Treat the output as a starting plan, not a promise. The formula assumes a fixed exchange rate between calories and kilograms that holds constant over months, when in reality a lighter body needs fewer calories to run, so the same deficit does progressively less work as weight comes off. Worked example — 0.5 kg a week from a 2500 kcal TDEE
Half a kilogram a week is a common, moderate target. At 7700 kcal per kilogram of stored fat, clearing 0.5 kg over seven days means a weekly shortfall of 0.5 times 7700, which is 3850 kcal — divided across the week that is 3850 divided by 7, exactly 550 kcal a day, the Required daily deficit the instrument reports.
Set against a Daily energy expenditure of 2500 kcal, that 550 kcal deficit puts the Target daily intake at 2500 minus 550, or 1950 kcal a day. Hold that intake steady while the expenditure figure stays roughly accurate and the arithmetic predicts half a kilogram off the scale each week, though real bodies rarely track so straight a line for long.

What is Daily energy expenditure, and where do I find that number?
It is your total daily calorie burn — resting metabolism plus digestion, movement and exercise — often shortened to TDEE. Get it from a BMR figure multiplied by an activity factor, from an activity tracker's estimate, or by averaging food logs against a weight that has held steady for a few weeks. This instrument takes that number as an input; it does not estimate it for you.
Why does the calculator block a faster weekly loss target?
A built-in guard refuses any combination that would push Target daily intake under 1200 kcal a day, because sustained intake below roughly that line risks nutrient shortfalls for most adults and needs clinical supervision to attempt safely. Lower the Target loss per week figure, or start from a higher Daily energy expenditure, and the guard clears on its own.
Is a bigger deficit always the faster route to a goal weight?
Not reliably, even though the arithmetic scales in a straight line. Deficits built for much more than about a kilogram a week are hard to sustain — hunger and fatigue climb, adherence falls, and a larger share of what is lost tends to be lean tissue rather than fat. A smaller deficit that gets held for months usually beats a steeper one abandoned after three weeks.
Does the calculator account for muscle loss during a diet?
No — it applies one fixed energy density to the whole deficit, regardless of what mix of fat and lean tissue is actually lost. Resistance training and enough dietary protein shift that mix toward fat, but the 7700 kcal per kilogram constant has no way to see or adjust for either factor. Read the output as a planning estimate, not a forecast of body composition.
