How this instrument works
Read this first: there is no ambient temperature and no elapsed time at which it is safe to leave a child or pet alone in a parked vehicle. Heatstroke can begin within minutes, cars heat up even on mild days, and a low number on this page is never a green light to wait, run one more errand, or 'just crack the windows.' If you ever see a child or pet alone in a hot car, call 911 immediately rather than waiting to see how hot it gets.
With that said, the number itself comes from real research: McLaren, Null & Quinn, 'Heat Stress From Enclosed Vehicles' (Pediatrics, 2005), which measured interior air temperature continuously for 60 minutes in a parked dark sedan on 16 clear, sunny days with outside temperatures from 72°F to 96°F. They found an average rise of 3.2°F every 5 minutes, with 80% of the eventual total rise complete by 30 minutes, reaching an average total rise of about 40°F by the 60-minute mark. This calculator is a straight-line fit through exactly those three published checkpoints — it does not invent a curve shape the paper doesn't report.
Two disclosures matter more than the number itself. First, this is an average: the study's own day-to-day readings ranged from a 28°F to a 49°F total rise, meaning the real temperature on a given day can run roughly 9°F hotter than what this calculator estimates for the same inputs — it understates risk more often than it overstates it. Second, the study only tested outside temperatures of 72°F to 96°F; this tool's input range extends further, to 60-120°F, for usability on unusually hot or mild days, but readings outside 72-96°F are extrapolation beyond what McLaren, Null & Quinn actually measured, not a separately validated result.

Worked example — 85°F outside, 30 minutes in
85°F outside air temperature, 30 minutes elapsed: the study found 80% of its average roughly 40°F total rise is complete by 30 minutes, so the estimated rise here is 32°F, for an estimated interior air temperature near 117°F. That is already well into a dangerous heat range for an infant, an older child, a pet, or anyone left inside — and it took just half an hour.
The study's coolest tested day, 72°F outside, still produced a measured interior reading of 117°F on some days after 60 minutes — a 45°F actual rise, noticeably above this calculator's 112°F average-based estimate for the same 72°F-at-60-minutes inputs (a 40°F average rise). That real gap between the average and the worst observed day is exactly why this tool's estimate should be read as a likely floor, never a forecast of the actual temperature in a specific parked car.

What if I enter a temperature or time outside what the original study tested?
The source study measured outside temperatures from 72°F to 96°F over 0 to 60 minutes; this calculator accepts a wider range, 60°F to 120°F ambient, so it stays usable on unusually mild or extreme days. Any reading outside 72-96°F is an extrapolation of the study's own linear fit, not a separately verified measurement — treat it with the same caution as the in-range numbers, or more.
Why does the temperature rise so fast in the first 30 minutes?
A parked car acts like a small greenhouse: sunlight passes through the glass, warms the dashboard, seats, and interior surfaces, and that heat radiates back into the cabin faster than it can escape. The source study measured that effect directly, finding 80% of the eventual total temperature rise happens within the first 30 minutes — most of the danger arrives early, not gradually over an hour.
Does cracking the windows help?
In the source study, the researchers also measured a subset of days with windows opened about 1.5 inches, and found it did not meaningfully slow the heating process. A car with slightly open windows still becomes dangerously hot quickly — it is not a substitute for never leaving a child or pet inside.
What should I do if I see a child or pet alone in a parked car?
Call 911 immediately — don't wait to see how hot it looks or how long the person has been gone. If the child or pet appears to be in distress and you can't wait for help to arrive, many jurisdictions have 'Good Samaritan' laws addressing rescue from a locked vehicle; check local guidance, but treat the call for emergency help as the first and most important step either way.
