How this instrument works
CBM stands for cubic meters, and it's the standard volume measure freight forwarders use to quote and bill ocean and air shipments: multiply a carton's length, width and height (in centimeters) and divide by 1,000,000 to convert to cubic meters, then multiply by how many identical cartons you're shipping for the total shipment volume.
Freight carriers don't just bill by actual mass, though — they bill by whichever is greater, actual weight or volumetric (dimensional) weight, a rule commonly called the W/M ('weight or measurement') basis. Volumetric weight approximates how much space a shipment takes up relative to how much it weighs, calculated as length x width x height x quantity (all in cm) divided by a shipping factor, commonly 5,000 for standard freight (though carriers do vary this divisor, so always confirm the figure your specific carrier uses).
This matters because it directly determines your shipping cost: light, bulky cargo (foam packaging, empty containers, textiles) often has volumetric weight far exceeding its actual weight, so you're billed for the space it occupies rather than what it weighs — while dense, compact cargo (metal parts, books, liquids in small containers) usually has actual weight exceed volumetric, so you're billed for its true mass instead. Either way, the carrier always charges the larger of the two figures.

Worked example — 10 cartons of a light, bulky product
10 cartons, each 40cm x 30cm x 30cm and weighing 5kg. Total CBM = (40 x 30 x 30 x 10) / 1,000,000 = 360,000 / 1,000,000 = 0.36 m³. Volumetric weight = (40 x 30 x 30 x 10) / 5,000 = 360,000 / 5,000 = 72 kg. Actual total weight is just 10 x 5 = 50 kg, so the chargeable weight is the larger volumetric figure: 72 kg — meaning you're billed for 22 kg more than the cargo actually weighs, because it's light and bulky relative to its size.
Compare that to 50 dense cartons of 20cm x 20cm x 20cm at 8kg each: total CBM is only 0.4 m³ and volumetric weight is (20 x 20 x 20 x 50)/5,000 = 80 kg, but actual total weight is 50 x 8 = 400 kg — here the actual weight dominates by a wide margin, so the shipment is billed at its true 400 kg, and the carton's bulk barely factors in.
Questions
Why am I charged for volumetric weight instead of my shipment's actual weight?
Because cargo space on a ship, plane or truck is limited by volume as much as by weight capacity, carriers bill whichever figure — actual or volumetric — better reflects the true cost of shipping your cargo. A large, light shipment takes up cargo space that could otherwise carry a heavier load, so volumetric weight ensures carriers are compensated fairly for bulky-but-light cargo rather than just its true mass.
Does every carrier use the same 5,000 divisor for volumetric weight?
No — 5,000 (cm³ per kg) is a commonly used standard for general/ocean freight, but many air freight carriers use 6,000 instead, and some couriers or regions use other figures entirely. Always confirm the exact divisor your specific carrier or freight forwarder applies before finalizing a shipping cost estimate, since a different divisor changes the volumetric weight result proportionally.
What's the difference between CBM and chargeable weight?
CBM (cubic meters) is purely a volume measurement — how much physical space your shipment occupies — while chargeable weight is the billing figure carriers actually charge against, set to the greater of your shipment's true actual mass and its volumetric (dimension-derived) weight. CBM by itself doesn't tell you your shipping cost; you need to compare the volumetric figure it implies against the actual mass to know which one applies.
How can I reduce my shipment's chargeable weight?
If volumetric weight is what's driving your cost (light, bulky cargo), reducing packaging size — tighter, more efficient cartons with less wasted internal space — directly lowers the volumetric-weight figure and can bring the chargeable weight down toward the actual weight. If actual weight already exceeds volumetric weight, packaging changes won't help; you're already being billed at your cargo's true mass, and only reducing that mass would lower the chargeable figure.
Should I calculate CBM per carton or for the whole shipment?
Both are useful for different purposes: per-carton CBM tells you how much space a single unit takes (useful for container-loading planning), while total shipment CBM — per-carton CBM multiplied by quantity — is what you compare against a container's total capacity or use to estimate your overall volumetric weight and shipping cost.
