How this instrument works

A Ccf is a hundred cubic feet of gas — the leading C borrows the Roman numeral for one hundred, the same convention behind Mcf for a thousand cubic feet. Meters read in Ccf because that's a physical volume passing through a pipe, but gas utilities bill in therms, where one therm equals exactly 100,000 British thermal units of heat energy. Volume and energy are related but not identical, because a cubic foot of gas doesn't always release the same amount of heat when it burns.

That's what the Heating value field captures, and it is genuinely variable rather than a fixed physical law. Natural gas is a mixture — mostly methane, with smaller amounts of ethane, propane, and inert gases like nitrogen — and that mixture differs by gas field, pipeline blend, and even season. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports a national annual average heating value that has recently sat close to 1.036 therms per Ccf, which is loaded here as a sensible starting point, not a number that applies exactly to any specific bill.

Worked example — a 10 Ccf gas bill, then a regional adjustment

A monthly bill reads 10 Ccf used. Leave Heating value at its 1.036 default and Energy (therms) shows 10.36 — the figure your supplier will actually charge for, not the round 10 Ccf your meter displayed.

Now suppose your utility prints its own factor of 1.02 therms/Ccf for that billing period, typical of gas carrying a bit more inert content. Change Heating value to 1.02 and the same 10 Ccf becomes 10.20 therms instead — sixteen hundredths of a therm less than the national-average estimate, a small gap on one bill that compounds across a whole heating season.

Why doesn't 1 Ccf of gas always equal the same number of therms?

Because a cubic foot of natural gas isn't a fixed bundle of energy — it's mostly methane mixed with smaller amounts of other gases, and that mixture varies by supply source, pipeline blend, and season. Two Ccf readings from different months, or different parts of the country, can represent noticeably different amounts of heat even though the volume unit is identical.

Where do I find my real heating value instead of the default?

Look for a line on your gas bill labeled something like 'therm factor,' 'BTU factor,' or 'heat content factor' — many utilities print it every month. If it isn't shown, call your utility and ask directly, or check their published rate documents. It's worth updating periodically, since the figure can shift slightly month to month.

What exactly is a Ccf, and how does it differ from an Mcf?

Ccf is a hundred cubic feet, using the Roman numeral C for hundred; Mcf is a thousand cubic feet, using M for the Roman numeral mille. One Mcf equals ten Ccf. Older bills and some regional utilities still use Mcf, so it's worth checking which unit your own meter actually reports before entering a number here.

Why do utilities bill in therms instead of cubic feet?

Because cubic feet measures volume, and volume alone doesn't tell you how much heat a furnace or water heater actually got. How much energy is one therm in everyday terms?

One therm is 100,000 Btu, roughly the heat released by burning a bit less than one Ccf of average-quality natural gas. It's a large enough unit that a typical household's monthly gas use for heating and hot water often runs from the tens to low hundreds of therms, depending on climate and home size.
