Cigarette butts are the single most commonly littered item on Earth, and unlike a can or a bottle, a single butt looks small enough to seem harmless — which makes it hard to grasp the scale of a cleanup haul or the toxicity risk it carries until the count is converted into something more tangible, like litres of volume or litres of water affected.
For volume, this calculator uses the widely-reused 'Butt-o-meter' reference popularized by cigarette-litter cleanup-tracking initiatives: roughly 170 cigarette butts occupy about one litre of space — a commonly repeated rule of thumb rather than a single laboratory measurement.
