How this instrument works
Feet and inches form a compound unit: nobody quotes a ladder, a doorway or a shelf as '5.74 feet' in everyday speech, because the foot-and-inch system was built to be read as a whole number of feet plus a smaller remainder, the way hours and minutes are read together rather than as '2.75 hours'. A metric length has to be split the same way before it means anything to someone shopping in feet and inches: divide the total by 0.3048 to get feet as a decimal, keep the whole part, then convert only the leftover fraction into inches.
The foot itself has been an exact fraction of the metre since 1 July 1959, when standards bodies in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa agreed an international yard of 0.9144 m, fixing the international foot at exactly 0.3048 m and the international inch at exactly 25.4 mm. Before that date, national feet disagreed by small amounts — the pre-1959 US foot, still used today only for some state survey coordinates, is about 0.3048006 m, a difference too small to see but large enough to matter in long land surveys.
This calculator's everyday use is product-spec conversion: online retailers outside the US frequently list appliance, furniture and fixture dimensions only in centimetres, while installation guides, doorway clearances and shipping-carrier size limits in the US are quoted in feet and inches. Converting a single centimetre figure into both fields at once — the whole feet and the leftover inches — answers the actual question a buyer is asking: will it fit?

Worked example — a 175 cm refrigerator height
A European appliance retailer lists a counter-depth refrigerator as 175 cm tall, and a US shopper needs to know whether it clears a 5-foot-9-inch cabinet opening. Entering 175 into Height (cm) gives a total of 175 ÷ 100 ÷ 0.3048 = 5.74146981627 feet. The Feet field takes the whole-number part and shows 5. The Inches field converts the remainder, 0.74146981627 feet, into inches by multiplying by 12, giving 8.89763779528, which the calculator displays as 8.90.
Read together, the fridge is 5 ft 8.90 in tall — about a tenth of an inch of clearance under a 5-foot-9-inch (5 ft 9.00 in) opening, close enough that the installer should still double-check with a physical tape measure before delivery day, since manufacturer spec sheets round their own centimetre figures too.
Questions
Why does the answer come as two numbers instead of one decimal figure?
Because feet and inches are not meant to be read apart. Saying a fridge is '5.74 feet' tall means little to most US shoppers, while '5 ft 8.90 in' matches how the number would be spoken, measured and marked on a tape. The Feet field always holds the whole number of feet; the Inches field holds everything smaller than a foot. Together, not separately, they are the converted length.
Is 1 foot exactly 0.3048 metres?
Yes, exactly, since 1 July 1959. Six English-speaking countries' standards laboratories fixed an international yard at 0.9144 m that day, which makes 1 foot precisely 0.3048 m and 1 inch precisely 25.4 mm, with zero measurement uncertainty attached to the conversion itself. Any rounding you see on screen comes only from display precision, not from the underlying definition.
Why not just multiply the centimetre figure by 12 straight away?
Multiplying by 12 only makes sense once the length is already expressed in feet — inches are twelfths of a foot, not twelfths of a centimetre. The calculation has to go centimetres to metres to feet first, then peel off the whole feet, and only then multiply what remains by 12 to get inches. Skipping the intermediate feet step gives a meaningless number.
What if the Inches field shows something very close to 12?
That is a display-rounding artefact, not an error in the maths. Because Inches is shown to two decimal places, a true value like 11.996 rounds up to 12.00 on screen even though the underlying feet figure was correctly floored before the inches remainder was computed. The Feet field itself is never wrong; only the printed inches can occasionally look like a full extra foot.
How do I convert feet and inches back into centimetres?
Add the inches to twelve times the feet to get a single number of inches, then multiply by 2.54 to get centimetres — that direction needs no long division, since 1 inch equals exactly 2.54 cm. For 5 ft 8.90 in: (5 × 12 + 8.90) × 2.54 = 68.90 × 2.54 = 174.99 cm, matching the original 175 cm to within display rounding.
Does the US survey foot change this answer?
No. The US survey foot, a slightly larger unit equal to about 0.3048006 m, is legacy-only: the National Geodetic Survey retired it for all purposes at the end of 2022 in favour of the single international foot used here. Anything converted today, including this calculator, uses the 0.3048 m international foot exclusively.
