How this instrument works

Every breath you exhale carries carbon dioxide — a byproduct of your body converting the food you ate into usable energy. It's a genuinely large number when totalled up: published physiology estimates, including NRDC's widely-cited figure of about 2.3 pounds (roughly 1.0 kg) of CO2 exhaled per resting adult per day, converge on somewhere around 0.9 to 1.1 kg per person per day for someone at rest.

This calculator multiplies that per-person daily figure by however many people and however many days you specify, so you can see the exhaled-CO2 total for one person over a year, a household over a month, or, as a curiosity, all of humanity over a single day. It's simple multiplication, but the results tend to surprise people the first time they see the scale.

Crucially, this is short-cycle biogenic carbon: the carbon atoms you exhale were captured from the atmosphere by plants through photosynthesis, eaten by you or by an animal you then ate, and are now being released back to the air — a loop that closes in months to years, not the millions of years it takes fossil fuels to form. Exhaling doesn't add new carbon to the atmosphere the way burning coal or oil does; this calculator exists to show the number, not to suggest breathing is an environmental problem.

Worked example — one person over a full year

At the commonly-cited default of 1.0 kg CO2 exhaled per resting adult per day, one person breathing normally for a full 365-day year exhales 1 × 365 × 1.0 = 365 kg of CO2 — a genuinely large number for something entirely involuntary and biologically unavoidable.

Scale that up and the numbers get startling fast: all roughly 8 billion people on Earth exhaling for just one day totals about 8 billion kilograms, or 8 million tonnes, of CO2 — which extrapolates to something on the order of 2.9 billion tonnes a year, a figure consistent with published estimates of global human-respiration CO2. That's part of the natural short-term carbon cycle, not a net addition to atmospheric carbon, since the carbon exhaled was recently drawn from the air by the plants that fed us.

How much CO2 does one person exhale per day?

Then why does this calculator exist at all?

Purely as a 'how big is this number really' curiosity — breathing produces a surprisingly large raw CO2 figure once you multiply it across a year or a population, and seeing that number helps build intuition for scale before comparing it against genuinely consequential emissions sources like transportation or energy use, which involve fossil, not biogenic, carbon.

Why does the exhaled-CO2 rate vary between sources?

Because it depends on body size, metabolic rate, and activity level, none of which are fixed across a population — larger people and more physically active people generally produce more CO2 per breath and per minute than smaller, more sedentary people. The 1.0 kg/day default here is a commonly-cited resting-adult average; you can adjust it upward to model a more active person or a group with a different typical body size.

Is holding your breath a meaningful way to reduce your carbon footprint?

No — because exhaled CO2 is short-cycle biogenic carbon that was already part of the atmosphere's existing carbon budget via the food chain, not a net addition, it isn't part of any meaningful carbon-footprint reduction strategy. Footprint-reduction efforts are much better aimed at genuinely fossil-carbon-emitting activities like driving, flying, or heating a home with fossil fuels.
