How this instrument works
A product's water footprint counts every liter used to grow, process, and deliver it — not just what ends up in your final cup, but the water used to grow the coffee plant, process the beans, and everything upstream of your kitchen. For coffee specifically, that upstream water use is enormous relative to the tiny volume of liquid you actually drink, because coffee plants require substantial irrigation and rainfall over the months it takes beans to grow and be processed.
This calculator uses a widely cited water-footprint research figure — roughly 140 liters of water behind a single 125 mL cup of coffee — and multiplies it by however many cups you drink per day, then extends that out to weekly and yearly totals.
