How this instrument works

Commute time here is the plain physics of travel: time equals distance divided by speed, converted from hours into minutes since that is how most people think about a daily commute. Enter the one-way distance you drive to work or school and the average speed you tend to hold — not the posted speed limit, but what you actually average once lights, turns and traffic are factored in — and the instrument returns your expected time on the road.

'Average speed' is doing the real work here: a 15-mile commute that flows at a steady 45 mph feels nothing like the same 15 miles crawling through stop-and-go traffic at 20 mph, and the two produce very different commute times from an identical distance. Because average speed already absorbs traffic, signals and turns implicitly, the honest way to use this instrument is to base your speed input on how a normal trip actually goes, not on the fastest theoretical run.

Worked example — 15 miles at a 30 mph average

A 15-mile commute along a mix of arterial roads and side streets averages about 30 mph once traffic and lights are accounted for. Entering 15 for distance and 30 for speed gives (15 / 30) x 60 = 30.0 minutes for the one-way trip.

For a round trip, double that: about 60 minutes of driving each day. If a faster route or lighter traffic bumped the average up to 40 mph over the same 15 miles, the one-way time would drop to (15 / 40) x 60 = 22.5 minutes — a real difference worth checking before committing to a route.

What speed should I actually use for my commute?

Use your realistic average speed over the whole trip, not the highest posted speed limit on any part of it. A good approach is to divide a distance you already know (from a map or your car's trip odometer) by a time you've actually clocked on a typical drive, which backs out your true average speed including lights, turns and normal traffic. That figure will usually be well below the fastest speed limit segment of your route.

How is commute time different from drive time for a road trip?
