How this instrument works

Start with the fluid ounce, older and smaller of this pair. American volume measure descends from Queen Anne's wine gallon of 231 cubic inches, which US law inherited and never revised, even after Britain dropped it for its roomier imperial gallon in 1824. Split that gallon 128 ways and you get the US fluid ounce; split it 16 ways and you get the cup. Divide those divisors, 128 over 16, and out falls 8 — nothing measured, nothing approximated.

Because 1959 pinned the inch at 25.4 mm, every volume here lands on terminating decimals: one US fluid ounce is 29.5735295625 mL and one cup 236.5882365 mL, both exact. Nutrition panels ignore that precision deliberately. Is a US cup exactly 8 fluid ounces?

Yes, exactly, and by definition rather than by measurement. US law sets the cup at 1⁄16 of that 231-cubic-inch gallon and the fluid ounce at 1⁄128 of it, so 8 drops out of pure division. Nothing accumulates as you scale either: 3 cups gives 24 floz, 0.375 cups gives 3, and 12.5 cups gives 100, each exact to as many digits as you care to read.

Does a cup of flour weigh 8 ounces?

No, and this single confusion ruins more baking than anything else. Fluid ounces measure space; ounces on your scale measure avoirdupois mass, 28.349523 g each. Water is why people conflate them, since one cup of it weighs about 8.35 oz. Does a dry measuring cup hold the same 8 fluid ounces?

Yes — capacity is identical, only technique differs.
