How this instrument works
Direct material price variance measures the dollar gap between what a company actually paid for a raw material and what its standard costing system assumed it would pay, multiplied by every unit bought in that purchase. The formula multiplies by the quantity purchased, not the quantity used in production, because the variance is meant to isolate a purchasing decision the moment materials arrive at the dock — before anything about how efficiently the factory floor uses them gets mixed in.
A cost accountant or plant controller running a standard costing system pulls this figure every closing period to route a specific question to a specific person: did the purchasing manager buy at, above, or below the negotiated price the budget assumed? A positive result under this formula is unfavorable — materials cost more than planned — and a negative one is favorable, though favorable is not automatically good; it can also mean a rush substitute or a lower-grade material got approved.
The number says nothing about why the price moved. A supplier surcharge, a lost volume discount, an emergency air-freighted order, or a shift to a different grade of the same material can all produce the same variance figure, and only the purchase order and the buyer's notes distinguish them. The standard price itself is also just an assumption set months earlier — a variance can be flagging that the standard has gone stale rather than that anyone bought badly.

Worked example — a $3,000 unfavorable miss
A parts plant's standard cost sheet sets a fastener at $4.20 a unit, but a rush order from the regular supplier actually billed $4.50 a unit for a 10,000-unit purchase. Feeding actual price 4.50, standard price 4.20, and actual quantity 10,000 into the formula gives (4.50 − 4.20) × 10,000 = $3,000.
That $3,000 is unfavorable because it is positive — the plant paid $3,000 more across the purchase than its budget assumed for the same quantity. Whoever owns the purchasing relationship gets asked what changed: a supplier increase, a lost discount tier, or a rushed order placed outside the standard contract, since the number alone cannot say which.

Why does the formula use quantity purchased instead of quantity used?
Price variance is meant to isolate a purchasing decision at the moment materials are bought, before any of it reaches the production floor. Using quantity purchased means the figure reflects exactly what procurement paid for exactly what procurement bought — mixing in usage would blend a buying question with a separate manufacturing-efficiency question that the material quantity variance already answers.
What does a negative price variance actually mean?
A negative result means the actual price paid was below the standard price, which this formula labels favorable — the company spent less per unit than budgeted across the quantity bought. Favorable is not automatically praise-worthy: it can also result from buying a cheaper, lower-grade material or overbuying to hit a volume-discount tier that raises inventory carrying cost elsewhere.
Who is usually held accountable for this variance?
Responsibility typically sits with the purchasing or procurement manager, since the standard price is set on the assumption that buyers negotiate and execute at that rate. A large unfavorable variance prompts a review of vendor selection, contract terms, and order timing rather than a review of the production line, which the material quantity variance covers instead.
Can a favorable price variance still cause problems?
Yes. A buyer chasing a lower unit price by ordering in bulk can post a favorable variance while quietly loading the warehouse with excess inventory, tying up cash and raising storage and obsolescence costs the price variance figure never captures. A favorable number deserves the same follow-up question as an unfavorable one: what changed, and what did that change cost elsewhere?
How is this different from the direct material quantity variance?
Price variance isolates what was paid per unit; quantity variance isolates how many units were used in production compared with the standard allowed for the output actually made, multiplied by the standard price. One flags a buying issue, the other a manufacturing-efficiency issue, and a single total materials variance can hide one offsetting the other.
Where does the standard price come from?
It typically comes from a negotiated supplier contract, a purchasing department's price list, or a historical average set during the annual budgeting cycle. Because it stays fixed for the period, a standard price that goes stale — say, after a market-wide raw material price shift — will generate a variance every period even when actual purchasing behavior has not changed at all.
