How this instrument works

Container Requirement 1, or CR1, is the crate-sizing standard published in IATA's Live Animals Regulations for transporting a dog or cat by air, and it's the standard this calculator applies. It's worth being clear about scope up front: CR1 is specifically an air-travel standard. Sizing a crate for use at home — for house-training, or as a den space — has no single codified formula the way air travel does; general guidance there is simply "big enough to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably," left to the owner's judgment. CR1 replaces that judgment call with four measurements and a fixed calculation, because an airline needs an objective pass/fail standard, not an opinion.

The four measurements are nose-to-tail length (A), elbow height off the ground (B), shoulder width at the widest point (C), and standing height from floor to the top of the head or ears (D). From those, CR1 sets three minimums: length must be at least A plus half of B, giving the dog room to lie fully stretched with legs extended; width must be at least C times two, enough for the dog to turn around and lie on either side; and height must be at least D, enough to stand and sit fully erect without ducking. IATA's published spec actually defines the internal height requirement as D plus the height of whatever bedding lines the floor, so the D figure calculated here is your dog's clearance above the bedding, not the full internal height of the box once bedding is added.

These are minimums, not targets — a crate can always be larger, and IATA notes that snub-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds should get a container at least 10% larger than the calculated minimum in each dimension, since restricted airways make heat and stress regulation harder in a tight space. Airlines and IATA-approved crate manufacturers publish generic small/medium/large size charts as a convenience, but those are approximations of this same formula — measuring your specific dog and running the calculation directly is the more reliable route to a crate that clears check-in.

  • Measure nose-to-tail length (A): tip of the nose to the base of the tail, dog standing naturally.

  • Read the three minimum crate dimensions and compare them against the crate you're considering.
  • Add roughly 10% to each dimension for a snub-nosed (brachycephalic) breed.

Worked example — a Beagle-size dog flying home for the holidays

A Beagle-size dog measures: nose-to-tail (A) 24 in, elbow height (B) 8 in, shoulder width (C) 10 in, standing height (D) 20 in. Length: 24 + 8/2 = 24 + 4 = 28 in. Width: 10 x 2 = 20 in. Height: 20 in, unchanged. The minimum compliant crate for this dog is 28 x 20 x 20 inches — and a crate advertised as "medium" that happens to measure smaller than that in any one dimension would not clear an airline's CR1 check, regardless of the label on the box.

A larger dog — nose-to-tail 30 in, elbow height 10 in, shoulder width 14 in, standing height 26 in — needs more room throughout: length 30 + 10/2 = 35 in, width 14 x 2 = 28 in, height 26 in, for a 35 x 28 x 26 inch minimum. The jump from the first dog's numbers to this one isn't proportional across every dimension, which is exactly why CR1 asks for four separate measurements rather than a single weight-based size chart — two dogs of similar weight can have meaningfully different proportions.

Questions

Does CR1 apply to the crate I use at home?

No. CR1 is IATA's air-travel standard, built for the specific safety needs of a pressurized cargo hold or cabin — turning room, ventilation, secure latching. General home crate sizing has no equivalent single codified standard; the common guidance there is simply that the dog should be able to stand, turn around, and lie down fully without cramping, sized to the owner's judgment rather than a fixed formula. A crate that's perfectly fine at home may still fail an airline's CR1 check if it's undersized against these four measurements.

Do all airlines use exactly the same CR1 requirements?

CR1 is the IATA industry standard that most international carriers reference, but individual airlines can layer on their own additional rules — weight limits for in-cabin travel, breed restrictions for cargo, specific crate brands or materials they'll accept. Meeting CR1's dimensional minimums is close to necessary but isn't automatically sufficient; always confirm your specific airline's current pet policy before you fly, since it can change requirements beyond the base CR1 numbers.

Why does a snub-nosed breed need a 10% larger crate?

Brachycephalic breeds — Bulldogs, Pugs, Boxers, and similar flat-faced dogs — already have narrowed airways that make regulating body heat and stress harder than in longer-muzzled breeds. A tighter crate concentrates heat and limits airflow right at the point where these dogs have the least physiological buffer. IATA's 10% margin per dimension is a safety allowance for that reduced tolerance, not an arbitrary rounding-up rule.

What if my two smaller dogs are used to sharing a crate?

IATA does permit up to two adult animals of similar size and temperament, comfortable cohabiting, to share one CR1 container, provided each individually weighs no more than 14 kg — but the width calculation changes when you do this, since two dogs need meaningfully more turning and lying room than a single-dog width formula provides. Confirm the co-housing width requirement with your airline directly rather than assuming the single-dog numbers on this page simply double.

How firm are these minimums — can I round down slightly?

Treat them as hard minimums, not rounding targets. Airline check-in staff measure the actual crate against the dog, and a crate that's a fraction of an inch under in any one dimension can be turned away at the counter, which is a much worse outcome than buying one size up in advance. When a measurement lands between standard commercial crate sizes, round up to the next size rather than down.

Does the height figure already include room for bedding?

No — the height shown here is D, your dog's standing height, on its own. IATA's published CR1 spec actually defines the required internal container height as D plus the height of the bedding material on the floor, specifically so your dog keeps the full standing clearance once bedding is in place, not less. Add a couple of extra inches on top of the figure shown here if you're lining the crate with a thick pad, straw, or absorbent bedding, rather than treating D as the finished interior height.
