How this instrument works

This calculator uses the MET (metabolic equivalent of task) framework, a standard exercise-science way of expressing how intense an activity is relative to sitting still. One MET represents resting energy use; an activity at 8 METs, like jogging, burns roughly eight times that resting rate. Multiplying an activity's MET value by your body weight gives calories burned per hour, which is the same method used across most fitness trackers and exercise-science references.

The donut calorie presets are round, typical category averages — glazed around 250 kcal, chocolate-frosted around 300, jelly-filled around 290, and a cake donut around 270 — since exact values shift with a specific bakery's or brand's recipe and size. The activity MET values (brisk walking, jogging, moderate cycling, moderate swimming, dancing, house-cleaning) are drawn from the widely cited Compendium of Physical Activities, a peer-reviewed reference researchers use to standardize MET assignments across studies.

Is the point of this calculator to discourage eating donuts?

Not really — it's meant as a concrete, illustrative way to see the calorie-to-exercise-time relationship, which most people underestimate. A donut takes seconds to eat but represents a meaningful chunk of moderate exercise to offset calorically, and seeing that side by side is often more useful context than the raw calorie number alone. Whether or not to eat the donut, and whether to think about it in terms of exercise at all, is entirely a personal call this calculator isn't trying to make for you.

Why do different activities take such different amounts of time?

Why does body weight affect how long it takes to burn calories?
