How this instrument works
Drive time for a road trip is distance divided by average speed — the same rate-time-distance relationship taught in any physics class, applied to a longer, mostly-highway drive. This instrument reports the result two ways: in decimal hours, useful for budgeting a day's driving or comparing against a work shift, and in minutes, useful for a precise arrival-time estimate.
The single most important input is average speed, and for a multi-hour road trip that means your realistic sustained cruising speed across the whole route — not the highest speed limit posted anywhere on it. A trip that includes stretches of interstate at 75 mph, slower sections through towns, and a stop or two for fuel and food will average out well below the fastest limit, so basing the estimate on your typical sustained pace produces a far more useful number than optimistic best-case math.
This instrument does not know about live traffic, weather, construction or how many rest stops you plan to take — it is a straight-line distance/speed estimate for the time actually spent driving. For trip planning, most drivers add a buffer on top of the raw drive-time figure to cover stops; this instrument gives you the driving-only baseline to build that buffer from.

Worked example — 250-mile road trip at 65 mph
A road trip covers 250 miles, mostly interstate, and the driver expects to average a steady 65 mph including a couple of brief slowdowns. Entering 250 for distance and 65 for speed gives time (hours) = 250 / 65 = 3.8462 hours, and time (minutes) = 3.8462 x 60 = 230.77 minutes.
That works out to about 3 hours and 51 minutes of actual driving. Leaving at 9:00 a.m. and adding, say, 30 minutes for a single fuel stop puts a realistic arrival around 1:20 p.m. — the drive-time figure is the driving-only baseline that stop time gets added on top of.

What average speed should I use for a road trip drive-time estimate?
Use your realistic sustained cruising speed across the whole route, not the fastest posted speed limit. Most interstate road trips average somewhat below the top speed limit once you account for construction zones, slower stretches through cities, and normal traffic — a trip with a 70 mph limit for most of its length might realistically sustain a 62–65 mph average. If you have driven a similar route before, your past actual average is the most reliable input.
Does this drive-time figure include stops for gas, food or rest?
No — the calculation is purely distance divided by speed, which estimates time spent actually driving. It does not add anything for stops. For trip planning, a common rule of thumb is to add roughly 15–30 minutes per planned stop on top of the raw drive-time result, more if you plan a longer meal break, to get a realistic total trip duration including breaks.
How is this different from the site's commute time calculator?
The underlying formula, time = distance / speed, is identical in both — this is the same rate-time-distance physics either way. The distinction is scale and context: this instrument is built for longer road trips at sustained highway speeds and reports both hours and minutes for day-planning, while the commute instrument targets shorter daily trips through mixed city traffic and reports minutes only. Use whichever framing matches the trip you're actually planning.
Should I use my car's speedometer reading or the posted speed limit?
Neither alone — use your best estimate of the average speed you'll hold across the entire trip, which will typically sit below both the speed limit (because of slower sections and stops) and any brief burst of highway speed you might hit. If you've driven the route before, back out your average from that past trip's actual distance and time; if not, estimating a few mph below the prevailing speed limit is a reasonable starting point.
Why does the calculator show both hours and minutes for the same trip?
Hours are convenient for day-level planning — quickly checking whether a trip fits comfortably within a single day of driving, or comparing against a work shift or flight duration. Minutes give you the precision needed to set a departure time or estimate an arrival time down to a specific hour and minute. Both numbers describe the exact same driving duration; they're just presented at the two granularities road-trip planning actually uses.
