How this instrument works

Raw engagement counts — likes, comments, shares — can't be compared fairly between a creator with 1,000 followers and a brand with 1 million, because the bigger account will almost always rack up bigger raw numbers without necessarily engaging its audience any better. Engagement rate fixes that by expressing total engagements as a percentage of the audience that could have engaged in the first place, turning wildly different follower counts into numbers on the same scale.

The calculation is direct: add up likes, comments, and shares on a post (or across posts, for an account-wide rate), divide by the follower count, and multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage. There are variations used across the industry — some brands include saves and clicks, others measure against reach or impressions instead of raw follower count — but likes-plus-comments-plus-shares over followers is the version most commonly cited as the baseline formula.

What counts as a 'good' rate varies enormously by platform and account size — smaller accounts routinely post higher engagement rates than large ones, and different platforms have very different typical ranges, so a rate is really only meaningful compared against a similar account or the same account over time, not against a single universal target.

Worked example — a post from a 10,000-follower account

A post earns 500 likes, 50 comments, and 20 shares, for 500 + 50 + 20 = 570 total engagements. Against an audience of 10,000 followers, that's 570 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 5.7% engagement rate.

That 5.7% sits well above the 1-to-5% range commonly cited as a solid overall engagement rate across platforms — a useful benchmark to compare this post against the account's own past performance, though it's worth checking platform-specific typical ranges too, since Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok all trend differently.

What counts as a 'good' engagement rate?

There's no single universal number — it depends heavily on platform (visual platforms like Instagram typically run higher than text-heavy ones), account size (smaller accounts tend to post higher rates than large ones), and industry. A commonly cited rough band is 1% to 5% as 'good' across platforms generally, but the most useful comparison is almost always against your own account's historical average or a close competitor of similar size, not a single fixed target.

Why does engagement rate usually go down as follower count grows?

Reach-based engagement rate (engagements divided by the number of accounts that actually saw the post) is arguably more precise since it accounts for the fact that not every follower sees every post, but it needs data this calculator's simpler follower-based version doesn't require.

Can engagement rate exceed 100%?

Yes, in principle — if a post generates more total likes, comments, and shares than the account has followers (common for viral content that reaches well beyond the existing audience, or gets heavily shared), the rate can climb past 100%. That's a sign the post reached far beyond the follower base itself, which follower-based engagement rate doesn't otherwise capture.
