How this instrument works

Tractors, generators, forklifts, boats, and other stationary or off-road equipment don't rack up an odometer reading the way a car does — instead they track total run-time on an hour meter, since 'miles traveled' has no meaning for a stationary generator and only a loose one for a tractor working a field in tight loops. Hour meters run whenever the engine is running, whether the machine is moving at highway speed, crawling through a field, or sitting still and idling.

That's exactly why converting hours to an equivalent mileage figure needs a user-supplied average speed rather than a fixed constant: 100 hours of highway-speed use covers vastly more ground — and puts vastly less wear on the engine per mile — than 100 hours of idle-heavy stop-and-go use.
