How this instrument works

Weather is the one place Fahrenheit still dominates daily life outside a doctor's office. The United States, plus a short list of territories tied closely to it — the Bahamas, Belize, the Cayman Islands, Palau, the Marshall Islands — report forecasts, heat advisories and record temperatures in Fahrenheit, while news agencies covering those stories for a global audience routinely convert the figures to Celsius before publishing. A traveller checking a US weather app, or an international reader following a heat-wave story, hits that gap constantly.

The ratio behind the conversion is exact rather than approximate: Fahrenheit and Celsius were both calibrated against the same physical reference points, water's freezing and boiling points at standard pressure, with Fahrenheit's scale laying 180 degrees across that gap where Celsius lays 100. Reduce 100⁄180 and you get 5⁄9 precisely, so subtracting 32 to align the two scales' zero points and then scaling by 5⁄9 introduces no rounding of its own — any imprecision in a converted forecast comes from the original reading, never from this arithmetic.

One curiosity worth knowing: 98.6°F is best known as 'normal' human body temperature, a figure this page's default happens to share, but a 98.6°F afternoon high is also a plausible, if unremarkable, summer reading for cities like Phoenix or Las Vegas — the two meanings are unrelated coincidences of the same number, not the same fact restated twice. Meteorologists worldwide, including in the United States, sidestep the whole ambiguity in technical reporting: aviation weather reports and most scientific temperature data are recorded in Celsius even where the public forecast is issued in Fahrenheit.

Worked example — a 98.6°F afternoon high during a Phoenix heat advisory

Extreme-heat records make the same arithmetic more dramatic. Death Valley's widely cited 1913 reading of 134°F converts to 56.7°C, and its more recent, less disputed 2021 reading of 130°F converts to 54.4°C — both used routinely by meteorologists and record-keeping bodies as reference points for how hot a place on Earth's surface has reliably been measured to get.

Questions

Why does the United States still forecast weather in Fahrenheit?

Mostly cultural inertia rather than any technical advantage. Fahrenheit's finer degree spacing was originally seen as convenient for describing everyday weather without needing decimals, and the US never followed Britain's 1960s-era switch to Celsius for public forecasts. Scientific and aviation weather data recorded within the US is generally in Celsius regardless — the Fahrenheit figure a US resident sees on the news is a public-facing convention layered on top of Celsius-based underlying data.

Is 98.6°F meaningfully hot as a weather reading, or just a coincidence with body temperature?

The two are unrelated. 98.6°F as an ambient air temperature, 37.0°C, is a genuinely hot but unremarkable summer afternoon in much of the American Southwest, while 98.6°F as human body temperature reflects an 1868 average from Carl Wunderlich's armpit-thermometer studies. That both land on the identical number is coincidence, not evidence that a 98.6°F day feels anything like body heat to stand in.

What was the hottest temperature ever recorded, in both scales?

Do pilots and meteorologists use Fahrenheit or Celsius?

Celsius, almost universally, even for US-based aviation. Standard aviation weather reports, known as METARs, record temperature in Celsius worldwide, including at every American airport, regardless of what the same airport's public-facing forecast displays in Fahrenheit for local news and travellers. The Fahrenheit figure most people see is a translation layered on top of Celsius-based source data, not the other way round.

Is 'feels like' temperature the same thing as air temperature converted between scales?

No — converting a reading between Fahrenheit and Celsius changes only its scale, not its meaning, while a 'feels like' or heat-index figure adds humidity's effect on top of the actual air temperature. A 98.6°F air temperature (37.0°C) with high humidity might carry a heat index well above 100°F, a separate calculated figure that this page's straightforward scale conversion does not attempt to reproduce.

Why is exactly -40 the one point where both scales agree?

Setting the conversion formula equal to itself, x = (x − 32) × 5⁄9, solves uniquely to x = −40, so −40°F names the same physical temperature as −40°C. It is a convenient way to sanity-check any Fahrenheit-to-Celsius tool: enter −40 and any correctly built converter should return exactly −40, no rounding involved.
