How this instrument works

Foot and mile arrived from different places. Rome counted the mille passus, a thousand double paces of roughly five thousand Roman feet. Medieval England measured land in furlongs — the furrow-length for an ox team at plough, settled at 660 ft, or 40 rods of 16.5 ft — while the acre ran one furlong by one 66-foot chain. Parliament had to choose between those traditions in 1593, and it chose furlongs: eight of them, 5280 ft, so land measure kept whole numbers even if travel distance looked strange.

Both units now carry exact metric definitions. Under the international yard and pound agreement signed in 1959 by standards laboratories in six countries, the yard became 0.9144 m precisely, which fixes the foot at 0.3048 m and the statute mile at 1609.344 m. That treaty left this particular conversion untouched, though: 5280 is counted, never measured, so feet resolved into miles exactly long before anyone tied either unit to the metre.

Both survive in daily work. American highway logs, mileposts, speed limits, odometers, deed descriptions and race distances run on miles, while construction drawings, surveys, property listings and aviation altitudes run on feet. Trouble starts where those worlds touch — site plans dimensioned in feet handed to road authorities that file everything by mile, fibre pulls priced per mile from footage counts, trail signs written up from survey stationing.

Why are there 5280 feet in a mile?

Because the English statute mile was built out of furlongs rather than Roman paces. One furlong — furrow-length for an ox team — stood at 660 ft, and the acre measured one furlong by one 66-foot chain. Rome's mille passus ran near 5000 Roman feet, which would have left the mile at a ragged 7.57 furlongs. Parliament's Weights and Measures Act of 1593 took eight furlongs instead: 8 × 660 = 5280. Land measure kept its round numbers, and travel distance inherited an odd one.

Is 0.000189393939394 an exact conversion factor?

No. It is 1⁄5280 cut short. True value runs 0.00018939393939…, with 39 repeating forever, so no finite decimal can hold it. Twelve significant figures leave an error near three parts in ten trillion — under one nanometre over the full mile, far below what any tape, measuring wheel or GPS receiver can resolve. That ratio of 5280 ft to one mile is itself exact by definition, so dividing by 5280 gives you a perfect answer whenever you want one.

Is this a statute mile or a nautical mile?

Statute, at 5280 ft. The nautical mile is a separate unit, fixed at exactly 1852 m or about 6076.115 ft, sized to approximate one minute of latitude, and it runs some 15 percent longer. What do familiar distances look like in feet?

One quarter mile is 1320 ft, familiar from drag racing, and the furlong, still used to call horse races, is 660 ft. Every 400 m running lap measures 1312.34 ft, so the track mile is four laps plus about 30 ft — those 9.34 extra metres runners complain about. American football fields with both end zones span 360 ft, putting the mile just under fifteen of them. Manhattan's short blocks run near 264 ft, roughly twenty to one mile.

Where are feet and miles still the working units?

United States practice keeps both, across road signs, surveying, construction and property records, while Britain still posts miles and yards on highways though it measures nearly everything else in metres. Liberia and Myanmar sign distances in miles too. Aviation splits them: altitude in feet almost everywhere on earth, horizontal distance in nautical miles. Wherever drawings dimensioned in feet meet routes logged by mile, this arithmetic is the joint between them.
