How this instrument works

Fielding percentage is (putouts + assists) / (putouts + assists + errors) — the share of a player's total fielding chances that were handled cleanly, without an error. A putout is credited when a fielder directly records an out (catching a fly ball, tagging a base); an assist is credited when a fielder contributes to an out completed by a teammate (fielding a grounder and throwing to first). Together, putouts plus assists plus errors make up total chances — every ball a fielder had a real opportunity to handle.

A perfect fielding percentage of 1.000 means a player converted every chance without an error across the innings measured — not that they reached every ball hit near them, only that they didn't misplay any ball they did get to. That distinction is exactly where the stat draws criticism: it counts errors on chances reached but says nothing about a fielder's range, so a player with limited mobility who rarely dives for a difficult ball can post a higher fielding percentage than a rangier fielder who reaches, and occasionally misplays, far more difficult chances.

In modern MLB, fielding percentages above .980 are common for infielders and often higher still for outfielders, who handle proportionally more straightforward fly-ball chances and fewer high-risk, off-balance plays. Because the exact bar shifts by position — catchers and infielders simply see far more chances, and harder ones, than outfielders — fielding percentage is best compared within a position rather than across the diamond.

Worked example — 300 putouts, 150 assists, 10 errors

Enter 300 into Putouts, 150 into Assists, and 10 into Errors. Total chances = 300 + 150 + 10 = 460, and fielding percentage = (300 + 150) / 460 = 450 / 460 = 0.978261 — a strong, reliable defensive season.

Change only the errors and the gap becomes clear: the same 300 putouts and 150 assists with zero errors would produce a perfect 1.000000, while raising errors to 25 on a smaller 250-chance sample (200 putouts, 50 assists) drops fielding percentage to 0.909091 — every additional error pulls the number down because it adds to the denominator without adding to the numerator.

What's the difference between a putout and an assist?

A putout is credited to the fielder who directly completes an out — catching a fly ball, tagging a runner, or stepping on a base for a forced out. An assist is credited to a fielder who contributes to an out that a teammate finishes, most commonly fielding a ground ball and throwing to first base. Both count equally toward fielding percentage's numerator.

What is a good fielding percentage?

In modern MLB, infielders commonly post fielding percentages above .980, and outfielders often run higher still, since fly-ball chances are generally lower-risk than infield grounders and relay throws. Because the typical bar shifts by position, fielding percentage is most meaningful when compared against players at the same position rather than across the whole roster.

Why is fielding percentage criticized as a defensive stat?

Because it only penalizes errors on chances a fielder actually reaches — it says nothing about range, or how many difficult balls a player gets to in the first place. A cautious fielder who rarely attempts a tough diving play can post a higher fielding percentage than a rangier fielder who reaches far more balls and occasionally misplays one of them, even though the rangier player likely contributes more defensive value overall.

Can fielding percentage be a perfect 1.000?

Yes — a fielding percentage of 1.000 simply means every chance recorded (putouts plus assists) was handled cleanly, with zero errors, over whatever sample is being measured. It does not mean the player reached every ball hit anywhere near them, only that they didn't misplay any of the chances they did get to.

Does fielding percentage include errors on chances a fielder didn't reach?

No. An error can only be charged on a play the official scorer judges the fielder should have made — a ball that a fielder never gets close to isn't scored as an error at all, and therefore has no effect on fielding percentage. This is the core of the range criticism: chances never reached simply don't enter the formula in either direction.
