Tank trucks, septic pump-out rigs, and bulk chemical haulers are all rated by how many gallons they carry, yet the figures that matter on the road — axle weight limits, hauling fees, disposal charges — are measured in tons. This calculator reports mass specifically in US short tons, 2,000 pounds each (about 907.185 kg), which is not the same number as a metric tonne (1,000 kg) or a British long ton (2,240 lb); confusing those three on a hauling manifest is a common and sometimes costly mistake.
The Density field is what lets the math match the actual load rather than an assumption. Plain water sits near 1.00 g/mL, but wastewater or septic contents carrying solids typically run a bit above that, diesel fuel sits around 0.85, and various chemical solutions can land well above or below water depending on what's dissolved in them. Because a truck's rated gallon capacity says nothing about what's currently inside it, the field is left open specifically so the number entered reflects the real cargo.

Worked example — a 500-gallon water load, then something denser
A 500-gallon tank of plain water, at the default Density of 1.00, comes to Mass (ton) = 2.086351113 — just over two US short tons for that load.
Now suppose that tank instead holds a lighter liquid near 0.80 g/mL, such as a light fuel oil: Mass (ton) drops to 1.6690808904 for the identical 500 gallons, about 0.42 tons lighter. Flip it the other way with a denser brine or slurry above 1.00 g/mL, and the same 500-gallon tank would weigh more than the water reading, not less — exactly the kind of swing that matters when a loaded truck is being checked against an axle limit.

Does wastewater or septic tank contents weigh the same as clean water?
