How this instrument works
A US liquid gallon is 231 cubic inches, a figure inherited from the wine gallon that English statute fixed in Queen Anne's reign. Britain abandoned that vessel in 1824 for an imperial standard of 4.54609 litres, but the young United States kept its older measure and has held it ever since. Once the 1959 international yard and pound agreement made an inch exactly 25.4 mm, those 231 cubic inches became 3.785411784 litres precisely — an exact decimal rather than a measured approximation.
A cup is what survives four successive halvings: gallon, half, quart, pint, cup. Two to the fourth power is 16, so 16 cups fill a gallon jug, and nobody had to measure anything to discover it. Working downward from that same definition, one US customary cup is 8 US fluid ounces, or 236.5882365 millilitres exactly, because 231 ÷ 128 cubic inches passes cleanly through a 25.4 mm inch into metric.
Both units stay in daily American circulation and almost nowhere else. Milk, cider, and paint ship by the gallon; iced tea and lemonade are mixed in two- and five-gallon coolers; orchard sprays are labelled as so many spoonfuls per gallon of water. Cups belong to the recipe: American cookbooks portion liquids and dry goods alike by them, while cooks in Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand reach for a 250 mL metric cup or simply weigh the ingredient.

Worked example — two gallons of iced tea
You are filling a two-gallon cooler for a Saturday tournament and the recipe you are scaling is written in cups. Enter 2 in the US gallons (gal) field and the US cups (cup) line reads 32.0 — four halvings applied to two gallons, or 256 US fluid ounces altogether.
That makes the arithmetic easy to check at the counter: 32 cups poured into 8-ounce paper cups is 32 servings, and a recipe asking for 4 cups of sugar syrup per gallon needs 8 cups here. Swap in a five-gallon cooler and the same factor gives 80 cups.
Questions
Is 16 cups per gallon exact, or rounded?
Exact. The chain is pure halving — a gallon is 4 quarts, a quart is 2 pints, a pint is 2 cups — so 4 × 2 × 2 = 16 with no measurement anywhere in it. Both units also rest on the same 231-cubic-inch definition, which since 1959 has been an exact number of litres, so the only rounding you will meet is in how many decimals the result line chooses to show.
Does the same 16 apply to imperial gallons?
Numerically yes, though the volumes differ. An imperial gallon is 160 imperial fluid ounces and the old British breakfast cup was 10 of them, so 16 of those cups fill it too — except that the imperial vessel holds 4.54609 litres against the American 3.785411784, a gap of about 20 percent. Commonwealth recipes today use a 250 mL metric cup instead, which puts roughly 18.2 cups in one. Never mix the two families inside a single recipe.
Why does a gallon of juice list fewer than 16 cups on its nutrition label?
Because food labels use a different cup. For nutrition labelling the US Food and Drug Administration defines a cup as exactly 240 mL, while the customary kitchen cup is 236.5882365 mL. Divide 3785.411784 mL by 240 and a gallon works out to about 15.77 label cups instead of 16. This sheet uses the customary cup — the one that belongs to the gallon, quart, and pint family.
Is this the liquid gallon or the dry gallon?
The liquid gallon, 231 cubic inches. The US dry gallon is a separate historical measure of 268.8025 cubic inches, roughly 16 percent larger, surviving mainly in the dry pints and quarts that berries and shellfish are still sold by. Recipe cups are liquid measure, so pairing them with the liquid standard keeps the whole chain consistent.
How do I turn a cup count back into gallons?
Divide by 16. Twenty-four cups is 1.5 gallons, 8 cups is half a gallon, 4 cups is a quart, and 2 cups is a pint. Because the factor is a power of two, halving works as a shortcut in either direction: keep doubling cups and you climb pint, quart, half, gallon in four steps. Can I measure flour or sugar by the gallon this way?
You can convert their volume, but not their weight. A cup of flour ranges from about 120 to 150 grams depending on whether it was scooped, spooned, or sifted, and granulated sugar packs differently again. The 16-cups-per-gallon count still holds, because it describes space rather than mass — but for baking in gallon quantities a kitchen scale removes the guesswork that scooping introduces.
