How this instrument works
Grout fills the joints between tiles, and how much of it a job needs depends on more than just the tiled area — smaller tiles pack more joint length into the same square footage than larger tiles do, so a floor of 6in tiles genuinely needs more grout than the same floor laid with 18in tiles, even though both cover the same area. A calculation that only looked at area and ignored tile size would miss this entirely.
This instrument follows the standard formula used across grout-calculator tools and referenced in tile-industry guidance: it finds the ratio of joint perimeter to tile face area for the entered tile dimensions, multiplies by joint width and depth to get a volume per square foot, then multiplies by grout density and the total tiled area to get raw pounds needed. A waste allowance is added on top, and the total is divided by the chosen bag size, rounded up to a whole bag.
Grout density is a typical, adjustable figure, not a fixed constant — this calculator's sanded-grout default is 0.1875 lb per cubic inch, with unsanded set noticeably lighter at 0.162 lb per cubic inch, but published density figures vary by brand, formulation, and how a manufacturer measures it, and can differ meaningfully from these planning defaults. Joint depth is generally set equal to tile thickness, since the joint runs the full depth of the tile. Always check your specific grout product's data sheet or packaging for its actual density and adjust both inputs to match before finalizing an order.

Worked example — 100 sq ft of 12 in × 12 in tile
A 100 sq ft floor is tiled with 12in × 12in tile, 1/8in (0.125in) joints, 3/8in (0.375in) tile thickness and matching joint depth, using standard sanded grout at 0.1875 lb/in³ with a 10% waste allowance and 25lb bags. Enter these values into their fields. The joint-to-tile ratio is (12+12) ÷ (12×12) = 24 ÷ 144 = 0.16667 per sq in.
Raw grout needed is 0.16667 × 0.125 × 0.375 × 0.1875 × (100 × 144) = 21.094 lb. Adding 10% waste brings that to 21.094 × 1.10 = 23.203 lb. Bags needed comes to ceil(23.203 ÷ 25) = 1 bag — a single 25lb bag covers this job with a small margin to spare.
Questions
Why does smaller tile need more grout for the same area?
Because smaller tiles pack more total joint length into the same square footage — a 6in tile has proportionally more edge (and therefore more joint) per square inch of face than a 12in or 18in tile does, since edge length scales with tile size while area scales with tile size squared. This calculator's formula captures that directly through the (tile L + tile W) ÷ (tile L × tile W) ratio, which grows as tile size shrinks.
Should I use sanded or unsanded grout, and does it change the density?
That choice depends on your joint width, not this calculator — sanded grout is generally used for joints wider than about 1/8in since the sand adds strength and resists shrinkage cracking, while unsanded grout suits narrower joints and polished or scratch-prone tile surfaces. Sanded grout is denser, around 0.1875 lb/in³, while unsanded is lighter, around 0.162 lb/in³, so switching types and updating the density input both matter for an accurate bag count.
Why is joint depth usually the same as tile thickness?
Because grout typically fills the joint from the top surface down to the substrate the tile sits on, which is exactly the tile's own thickness in a standard installation — a thicker tile therefore has a deeper joint to fill, and needs correspondingly more grout, even at the same joint width and tiled area. If your installation uses a different joint depth than the tile thickness, enter that actual depth instead.
How much waste allowance should I add?
10% is a commonly used default that covers mixing losses, tooling excess grout off the tile surface, and general material lost during application. Larger jobs with an experienced installer sometimes use a smaller allowance, while intricate patterns, mosaic tile, or a first-time DIY grout job often benefit from a somewhat larger buffer, since running short mid-job with mixed grout already curing is more disruptive than having a bit left over.
What bag size should I choose?
It depends entirely on what your specific grout product is sold in — sanded grout is commonly available in both 10lb and 25lb bags, and premixed or specialty grouts sometimes come in other sizes entirely. Check the product you're actually buying and enter its exact bag weight, since using the wrong bag size in this calculator will round the final bag count to the wrong package size.
