How this instrument works
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, or GVWR, is the maximum total weight a vehicle is rated to safely carry, set by the manufacturer and covering the vehicle itself plus every passenger, every item of cargo, and every accessory added to it. Curb weight is the vehicle's own weight as it left the factory — the empty vehicle with standard equipment, full fluids, but no passengers or cargo aboard. Payload capacity is what's left over: GVWR minus curb weight.
That payload figure is the real, practical limit on how much you can load into or onto a vehicle — passengers, luggage, tools, towing tongue weight, a truck bed full of cargo, aftermarket accessories, anything — before exceeding the manufacturer's safety rating. Exceeding GVWR can strain brakes, suspension, tires and structural components beyond what they were engineered for, which is why payload capacity is printed on the vehicle's tire-and-loading placard, usually inside the driver's door.
Payload capacity is not the same thing as towing capacity, which is a separate rating for weight pulled behind the vehicle on a trailer rather than carried within or on it, and it can also differ meaningfully between trims of the same model — a heavier trim level, larger engine, or added options can increase curb weight and therefore reduce the available payload even if GVWR stays the same across the lineup.

Worked example — a pickup rated 7,000 lb GVWR
A pickup truck's door placard lists a GVWR of 7,000 lb and a curb weight of 5,200 lb. Entering those figures gives payload = 7,000 - 5,200 = 1,800 lb of maximum payload capacity.
That 1,800 lb has to cover everything added to the empty truck: driver and passengers, cargo in the bed, any installed accessories like a toolbox or bed liner, and trailer tongue weight if towing. Four passengers averaging 180 lb each already account for 720 lb, leaving roughly 1,080 lb of the 1,800 lb budget for cargo and gear before the truck reaches its rated GVWR.

Where do I find my vehicle's GVWR and curb weight?
Both figures are typically printed on the vehicle's tire-and-loading-information placard, usually located on the driver's-side door jamb or door edge, alongside the manufacturer's owner's manual and often the manufacturer's published spec sheet for that model and trim. GVWR and curb weight can vary between trims and configurations of the same model, so use the numbers for your specific vehicle rather than a general figure found online for the model line.
Is payload capacity the same as towing capacity?
No — payload capacity is the weight a vehicle carries within or on itself (passengers, cargo, accessories, and trailer tongue weight if towing), while towing capacity is a separate rating for the weight of a trailer pulled behind the vehicle. Both are limited by different combinations of the vehicle's structural, brake and drivetrain ratings, and a vehicle can have plenty of towing capacity left while being close to its payload limit, or vice versa — check both ratings separately for a loaded, towing vehicle.
What happens if I exceed my vehicle's GVWR?
Exceeding GVWR puts stress on components — brakes, suspension, tires, frame and axles — beyond what the manufacturer engineered and tested them to handle safely, which can degrade handling and braking performance and accelerate wear or, in serious cases, cause a component failure. Overloaded commercial vehicles are also a common target of roadside weight enforcement, since exceeding GVWR is a safety violation under US DOT/FMCSA regulations for vehicles subject to those rules.
Does trailer tongue weight count toward my vehicle's payload capacity?
Yes — tongue weight, the downward force a trailer's hitch exerts on the tow vehicle, counts as part of the towing vehicle's total load and reduces the payload capacity available for passengers and cargo while towing. This is a common way vehicles get accidentally overloaded: a driver accounts for passengers and cargo correctly, but forgets that a loaded trailer's tongue weight is also drawing from the same payload budget.
Why does payload capacity differ between trims of the same truck model?
Heavier trims often add curb weight through larger engines, four-wheel drive hardware, bigger wheels, added sound insulation, or additional standard features, and that added curb weight subtracts directly from payload if GVWR stays similar across trims. This is why a base-model truck sometimes has a higher payload rating than a loaded higher trim of the identical model — always check the payload figure for your exact configuration rather than assuming it matches a base or average trim.
