How this instrument works

Philippine higher education uses a numeric grading scale that runs the reverse of the American GPA convention: 1.00 is the highest, best possible grade, and the scale runs upward from there as performance drops, typically reaching 5.00 as a failing mark. It's a system common across Philippine universities, and while individual institutions can set slightly different exact grade-point boundaries, the 1.00-best-to-5.00-worst direction and general structure hold consistently nationwide.

General Weighted Average, or GWA, is the semester (or cumulative) summary figure computed from every course's grade, weighted by how many units that course was worth — the same credit-weighting logic used everywhere GPA-style averages exist. Each course's grade is multiplied by its unit count, those products are summed across all courses, and the total is divided by the sum of units, so a heavier course's grade pulls the overall average more than a lighter one does.

Because 1.00 is the best grade on this scale, a lower GWA is what students aim for, not a higher one — the opposite intuition from a US-style GPA, where a higher number means better performance. Worked example — a four-course term

A student earns a 1.25 in a 3-unit course, a 1.50 in another 3-unit course, a 1.75 in a third 3-unit course, and a 2.00 in a fourth 3-unit course. Multiplying each grade by its units: 1.25×3 = 3.75, 1.50×3 = 4.5, 1.75×3 = 5.25, and 2.00×3 = 6.

Summing those products gives 3.75 + 4.5 + 5.25 + 6 = 19.5, and summing the units gives 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. Dividing, 19.5 ÷ 12 = 1.625 GWA — since every course carried the same 3 units here, this also equals the simple average of the four grades, though that wouldn't hold true if the unit loads differed.

Why is a lower GWA better, unlike a US GPA?
