How this instrument works

Under this convention, 'I run' (5 characters counting the space) counts as one word, the same as a much longer word like 'rhinoceros', which also lands at exactly two of these standardized five-character units.

Gross words a minute (GWAM) is the raw figure: total characters typed, divided by five, divided by the time taken, with no adjustment for accuracy. Why does typing speed count every 5 characters as one "word" instead of actual words?
