How this instrument works
Hexagon quilting — often called 'Grandmother's Flower Garden' in its classic rosette arrangement — is typically pieced using English paper piecing, where fabric is basted around rigid paper hexagon templates before being hand-stitched together edge to edge. This calculator estimates piece count by comparing your target quilt's total area against the area of a single regular hexagon of your chosen side length, using the standard geometric formula for a regular hexagon's area: three times the square root of three, divided by two, times the side length squared.
This is a coverage estimate, not a literal piece-by-piece tessellation count — a real hexagon quilt top has partial hexagons and trimmed edges wherever the honeycomb pattern meets the quilt's straight border, since hexagons don't tile a rectangle without cutting some of them in half along the edges. The waste-factor percentage exists specifically to account for that unavoidable edge loss, on top of ordinary cutting mistakes, rather than assuming perfect, gapless coverage.
Smaller hexagons need a proportionally larger waste allowance than bigger ones, since a small hexagon size packs more edge pieces relative to the quilt's total area — increase the waste percentage accordingly for finer hexagon work, or for prints where careful pattern matching across pieces adds extra cutting loss.

Worked example — a 60×80 in quilt from 3-inch hexagons
A single 3-inch hexagon's area: (3 × √3 ÷ 2) × 3² = 2.598 × 9 = 23.383 square inches. The target 60×80 in quilt top covers 4,800 square inches.
Raw coverage: 4,800 ÷ 23.383 = 205.3 hexagons. Applying a 10% cutting-waste allowance for edge pieces and mistakes: 205.3 × 1.10 = 225.8, rounded up to 226 hexagons needed.
Questions
Why does the hexagon count get rounded up with a waste allowance instead of an exact tessellation count?

Does this calculator account for the half-hexagons typically needed along quilt edges?
