How this instrument works

Naismith's Rule is a rule-of-thumb hiking-time estimate devised in 1892 by the Scottish mountaineer William W. Naismith and published in the Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal. It reduces a walk to two additive terms: an hour of walking for every 5 km covered on the map, plus a further hour for every 600 m of total height gained. Naismith proposed it for 'men in fair condition on easy expeditions' — a baseline pace to plan around, not a race target.

The two terms are added, not blended, because Naismith treated distance and climbing as separate costs on a hiker's legs. A flat 10 km walk costs 2 hours by the distance term alone; add 600 m of ascent along the route and a further hour is due, for 3 hours total, regardless of exactly where the climbing happens along the way. Descent is ignored entirely in the classic rule, on the reasoning that going downhill is roughly as fast as flat ground for a fit walker.

This instrument computes the original 1892 formula exactly, with no added corrections. In practice most hikers pad it: guidebooks commonly add up to 50% for winter conditions, loaded packs, rough or pathless terrain, or a group with mixed fitness, and specialist variants like the Aitken and Langmuir corrections adjust the ascent term for steep or difficult ground. Treat the raw output as a fit-hiker, good-trail floor, and build in a generous margin for anything less favourable.

Worked example — 10 km with 600 m of ascent

Enter a distance of 10 km and a total ascent of 600 m. The distance term gives 10 ÷ 5 = 2 hours; the ascent term gives 600 ÷ 600 = 1 hour. Estimated hiking time reads 3.00 hours — Naismith's baseline for a fit walker on a reasonable trail, before any stops.

Questions

Does Naismith's Rule include rest breaks or lunch stops?

No. The 3.0-hour figure in the worked example is walking time only — moving time on the trail, with the clock stopped for nothing. Guidebooks that quote Naismith-based times typically tell you to add 10-15 minutes an hour for a fit party's normal photo and snack stops, and considerably more for a longer lunch or a large group.

Why doesn't this calculator subtract time for downhill sections?

Because the classic 1892 rule doesn't either — Naismith's original formula only counts distance and ascent, treating descent as roughly the same pace as flat ground for a fit hiker on a good trail. Later refinements, notably the Aitken and Langmuir corrections, do adjust for steep descents, but they change the ascent term rather than adding a separate downhill term, and this instrument sticks to the original two-term formula.

How much should I add for a loaded backpack or bad weather?

There's no single number in the original rule, but commonly used field guidance adds 25-50% to the raw Naismith time for a multi-day pack, wet or snow-covered ground, navigation in poor visibility, or a group whose slowest member sets the pace. Treat the calculator's output as the fastest plausible time and build your turnaround decisions around a padded estimate, not the raw one.

Is Naismith's Rule accurate for trail running or fastpacking?

Not really — it was built around a normal fair-weather walking pace, so trail runners and fastpackers moving well under 5 km/h on the flat will find it overestimates their time substantially. It remains most useful as a planning tool for on-foot hikers covering ground at a walking pace, with or without a pack.

What if my route climbs and descends more than once?

Only the total ascent matters to the classic formula — sum every metre of uphill gain across the whole route, ignoring the descents entirely, and enter that single total. A route that climbs 600 m, drops 400 m, then climbs another 200 m has 800 m of total ascent, not the 400 m net gain from start to finish.
