How this instrument works
An hourly rate becomes an annual figure only after somebody decides what a year of work actually contains, and this instrument makes that decision explicit instead of hiding it inside a single weeks-worked field. It starts from a 52-week year, subtracts any Additional unpaid weeks off per year to find how many weeks you are actually clocked in and paid for hours worked, then adds back the value of paid vacation and holiday days separately — because those days are compensated even though no hour is logged against them.
Each paid day off is valued at one-fifth of a week's pay — hours per week divided by five, multiplied by the hourly rate — which mirrors how most payroll systems price a single holiday inside a standard five-day schedule. That shortcut assumes five working days a week, so someone on four ten-hour shifts is paid for the same weekly hours but the calculator still divides by five, and a single paid day ends up worth a little more of an actual shift than the arithmetic shows.
The split matters most when comparing two offers that describe time off differently — one employer lists ten paid holidays plus a week of unpaid personal leave, another simply quotes fifty weeks of pay. Folding both kinds of time off into one blended weeks-paid number either double-counts paid holidays already inside the hours worked, or erases the real cost of unpaid leave. Keeping them apart avoids both mistakes and lets the same instrument model a raise, a furlough or a new benefits package without changing its structure.

Worked example — $25 an hour with 10 paid days off
Take a $25-an-hour role scheduled for 40 hours a week, with 10 paid vacation and holiday days and no additional unpaid leave. Working weeks per year comes out to 52 (52 minus zero unpaid weeks), so the base pay is $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000. The 10 paid days off then add $25 × (40 ÷ 5) × 10 = $25 × 8 × 10 = $2,000, since each paid day is worth one-fifth of that $1,000 week. Annual salary reads $54,000 — the full effect of paid time off sitting visibly on top of hours actually worked.
Change nothing but the leave: drop the 10 paid days to zero and set 2 unpaid weeks off instead, and working weeks falls to 50, giving $25 × 40 × 50 = $50,000 with no addition on top — two thousand dollars lower than the golden case, purely because that time off is unpaid. Restore the 10 paid days alongside the 2 unpaid weeks and the two effects net out to $52,000, still $2,000 above the pure 50-week figure and $2,000 below the fully paid 52-week one — the calculator tracking both kinds of time off at once rather than collapsing them into a single average.

Why does 10 paid vacation days add $2,000 instead of nothing?
Because paid time off is still paid — the days are counted in your annual figure even though no hour is logged against them, valued at one-fifth of a week's pay (hours per week ÷ 5) for each day. On the $25-an-hour, 40-hour example, that is $25 × 8 × 10 = $2,000 stacked on top of the 52 working weeks, for $54,000 total. Leaving Paid vacation/holiday days per year at zero removes that addition entirely and returns the plain hours-times-weeks figure.
What happens if I take unpaid leave beyond my paid days off?
Every week entered in Additional unpaid weeks off per year is subtracted from the 52-week base before pay is calculated, so it genuinely lowers the annual figure rather than being absorbed elsewhere. Two unpaid weeks on a $25-an-hour, 40-hour schedule cut Working weeks per year to 50 and Annual salary to $50,000 if no paid days offset it — a real $2,000 loss, distinct from paid vacation, which never reduces the total.
Why is each paid day off valued at hours divided by five?
The calculator assumes a standard five-day working week, so one day equals one-fifth of the weekly hours entered — at 40 hours per week that is 8 hours, priced at the hourly rate. Someone working four ten-hour shifts logs the same 40 weekly hours but actually takes a full day off worth more than one-fifth of a five-day pattern that does not match their real schedule, so the dollar value per paid day is a close approximation rather than an exact one for compressed schedules.
Does this include overtime, bonuses, taxes, or other deductions?
No. The formula multiplies one hourly rate by scheduled hours and weeks, plus the value of paid days off — nothing here adds overtime premiums, shift differentials, bonuses or tips, and nothing subtracts income tax, Social Security, Medicare, health premiums or retirement contributions. Treat Annual salary (including paid time off) as gross pay for comparing offers, not as what actually lands in a bank account.
How is this different from multiplying rate by hours by 52?
That shortcut assumes every week of the year is both worked and paid, which understates pay when an employer offers paid vacation on top of hours worked, and overstates it when any week goes unpaid. This calculator prices paid and unpaid time separately, so a role with 10 paid holidays reads higher than plain rate times hours times 52, while a role with unpaid furlough weeks reads lower — the two effects can also be entered together and offset each other, as the worked example above shows.
Who actually needs to separate paid from unpaid time off?
Anyone comparing job offers with different leave structures, or anyone modeling a life change that adds unpaid time — an unpaid sabbatical, a seasonal furlough, or extended leave beyond what an employer covers. A retail worker weighing a seasonal role against a year-round one, or someone negotiating unpaid leave against a fixed number of paid holidays, gets a more honest annual figure than a single blended weeks-paid input can produce.
