How this instrument works

An inch began life as a twelfth of a foot — Latin uncia, a twelfth, which also gave English its ounce — and for centuries it was pinned to nothing sturdier than three barleycorns laid end to end, a definition written into English statute under Edward II. Precision engineering made that intolerable. Industry moved first, Britain's standards body settling on a 25.4 mm inch in 1930 and its American counterpart in 1933; then on 1 July 1959 six national standards bodies signed the International Yard and Pound Agreement, fixing one yard at 0.9144 m and one inch, by simple division, at 25.4 mm exactly.

Note which way that definition runs. An inch is defined from a metre, never a metre from an inch, and a metre has itself been defined since 1983 as how far light travels in vacuum in 1⁄299792458 of a second. Follow that chain and every inch on a shop drawing traces back to a caesium clock. Before 1959 no such clean chain existed: an American inch, inherited from an 1893 Mendenhall Order that set the yard at 3600⁄3937 m, measured 25.4000508 mm, while Britain's imperial inch, referenced to a bronze bar cast in 1845, sat a shade under 25.4 mm. Two parts per million is nothing on a shelf bracket and quite a lot on a survey grid.

Both units still turn up on one drawing. Inches govern US framing lumber and door leaves, nominal plumbing sizes, tyre rim diameters, screen diagonals, and electronics: a 19-inch equipment rack is 482.6 mm wide, one rack unit is 1.75 in or 44.45 mm, and a 0.1-inch pin pitch is exactly why 2.54 mm shows up on every breadboard and header strip. Metres handle nearly everything else on Earth. Where those worlds meet — an American compressor bolted into a European frame, a Japanese lathe cutting an imperial thread — 0.0254 does all of the reconciling.

Worked example — a 36-inch door in a metric opening

A US interior door leaf is commonly 36 in wide, that being the width specified where a wheelchair needs clear passage. Enter 36 into the Inches (in) field and the Metres (m) line reads 0.914400 — exactly 0.9144 m, because 36 inches is one yard, and one yard is precisely what 1959 fixed outright.

That figure decides whether a European supplier can help you. Stock leaf widths there run 800 and 900 mm, so a 914.4 mm American door misses a 900 mm frame by 14.4 mm — a gap no amount of planing closes without moving the lockset. Order 36 in from a metric shop and quote 914.4 mm, never 'about 910'.

Questions

Is one inch exactly 0.0254 metres?

Yes — exactly, by definition rather than by measurement. On 1 July 1959 standards bodies from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa fixed an international yard at 0.9144 m. Divide by 36 and an inch becomes 25.4 mm, or 0.0254 m, carrying no uncertainty whatsoever. Whatever error you spot in a result came from rounding a displayed decimal, never from that factor.

Why does converting metres back into inches never terminate?

Because 0.0254 is 127⁄5000 and 127 is prime. Inverting gives 5000⁄127 = 39.3700787401574803149606…, a decimal that repeats on a 42-digit cycle rather than stopping. It looks irrational and is nothing of the sort — written as a fraction it is exact. Multiplying metres by 39.3700787 puts you within a nanometre per metre, finer than any tape measure will ever resolve.

Did an American inch and a British inch ever differ?

They did, by roughly two parts per million, until 1959. A US inch descended from an 1893 Mendenhall Order defining the yard as 3600⁄3937 m, making an inch 25.4000508 mm; Britain's imperial inch, referenced to a bronze bar, came out a hair under 25.4 mm. Across a doorway that discrepancy is a fraction of a micrometre. Across a hundred-kilometre survey traverse it is centimetres, which is why surveyors kept an old US survey foot alive until NIST and NOAA retired it on 31 December 2022. New work uses 0.0254 only.

How do I enter a fractional size such as 5 3⁄8 inches?

Turn the fraction into a decimal first: divide top by bottom, then add it to your whole inches. So 5 3⁄8 becomes 5.375, 7⁄16 becomes 0.4375, and 1⁄32 becomes 0.03125. Type that into the Inches (in) field. Halves, quarters, eighths, sixteenths and thirty-seconds all give terminating decimals because their denominators are powers of two, so no rounding creeps in at this step. Thirds and sixths do not terminate, but they rarely appear on a rule.

What is a thou or a mil in metric terms?

One thou — a thousandth of an inch, called a mil in America and on printed-circuit drawings — is exactly 25.4 micrometres, or 0.0000254 m. Machinists who speak of 'a tenth' mean a ten-thousandth of an inch, 2.54 micrometres, about a thirtieth of a human hair. Since 0.0254 is exact, such values convert with no accumulated error at all: 12 thou is precisely 0.3048 mm, echoing a foot's factor three decimal places down.

Does a six-decimal display ever hide something?

Rarely, and only right at the bottom. Six decimals of a metre is one micrometre, and any inch entry with three or fewer decimal places lands squarely on that grid. Push further and you can see it: 0.001 in is 0.0000254 m, which six decimals show as 0.000025. If you genuinely work in millionths of an inch, multiply by 25.4 and read millimetres instead. For carpentry, machining and surveying alike, micrometre display resolution sits far below anything you can cut.
