How this instrument works

This calculator is the IVF-specific version of this site's other conception-based due date instrument. Ordinary conception dating has to estimate when ovulation happened, usually by counting backward from cycle length, because the exact day is rarely known for certain. IVF removes that guesswork entirely: the clinic records the precise date the egg was retrieved, which is essentially the conception date, since fertilization follows retrieval within hours. The only piece this calculator needs to work backward to that date is how long ago the transfer happened and how old the embryo was on that day.

Embryos are transferred either at the cleavage stage, day 3 after retrieval, or at the blastocyst stage, day 5. Add the embryo's age at transfer back onto the number of days since the transfer itself, and the result is the number of days since retrieval — a day-5 embryo transferred 14 days ago means retrieval happened 14 + 5 = 19 days ago, exactly as if the egg had never left the lab for those extra five days. From there, the calculator runs the same 266-day, conception-based full-term convention this site's other conception-date due date calculator uses: subtract days since retrieval from 266 to get days remaining.

The 266-day figure, 38 weeks, is the standard estimate of full-term gestation counted from conception rather than from the last menstrual period, which instead runs 280 days by convention. It is still a population average, not a fixed schedule — real deliveries commonly land anywhere from about two weeks before to two weeks after this estimate, IVF pregnancy or not. What IVF changes is the certainty of the starting point, not the width of the range around the final number.

Worked example — 14 days since a day-5 transfer

Fourteen days have passed since a day-5 blastocyst transfer. Add the embryo's age back on: 14 + 5 = 19 days since retrieval. Subtract that from the 266-day constant: 266 − 19 = 247 days remaining until the estimated due date.

Change the inputs and the same two-step arithmetic still applies. Ten days since a day-3 transfer gives 10 + 3 = 13 days since retrieval, and 266 − 13 = 253 days remaining. Thirty days since a day-5 transfer gives 30 + 5 = 35 days since retrieval, and 266 − 35 = 231 days remaining — the later the transfer sits in the past, the fewer days remain, exactly as the subtraction predicts.

Questions

Why does IVF dating start from retrieval instead of the transfer date itself?

Because retrieval, not transfer, is the moment closest to conception — the egg is fertilized within hours of being retrieved, while the transfer happens days later once the embryo has grown to the cleavage or blastocyst stage. Counting from transfer alone would ignore however many days the embryo already spent developing beforehand, so this calculator adds that embryo age back on to reconstruct the true starting point.

How is this different from this site's other conception-based due date calculator?

The underlying convention is identical — 266 days from conception. This calculator is built for the IVF case specifically: instead of asking for days since conception directly, which nobody tracks in exactly those terms, it asks for days since transfer and the embryo's age at transfer, then reconstructs days since retrieval internally before running the same subtraction from 266.

Why does embryo age matter if the transfer date is what's actually recorded?

Because a day-3 and a day-5 embryo transferred on the same calendar day came from eggs retrieved on different days. A day-5 blastocyst spent five days developing before transfer, versus three for a cleavage-stage embryo, so retrieval happened two days earlier for the day-5 case even with an identical transfer date. Embryo age is what lets the calculator work that gap out correctly.

Does the embryo's age at transfer affect how accurate the due date estimate is?

No — day 3 and day 5 transfers reconstruct the same retrieval date and the same conception-based due date once the arithmetic accounts for the age difference; neither transfer day is inherently more or less accurate for dating purposes. Clinics choose day 3 versus day 5 transfer based on embryo development and clinical factors unrelated to due-date precision.

Why is the constant 266 days rather than 280?

280 days, 40 weeks, is the conventional figure counted from the last menstrual period, which sits roughly two weeks before typical conception. Counting instead from conception itself — which IVF retrieval date effectively is — the same full-term pregnancy runs about 266 days, 38 weeks. Both describe the same length of pregnancy; they simply start the clock at different, equally valid reference points.

How much can a real IVF delivery date vary from this estimate?

By roughly two weeks in either direction, same as any due-date estimate built on a population average rather than an individual forecast. IVF removes the uncertainty around when conception happened, which is a real precision gain over natural-cycle dating, but it does not remove the ordinary biological variation in how long any given pregnancy actually runs.
