How this instrument works

Pounds per square foot (psf) and pounds per square inch (psi) are both pressures: a force spread over an area, not a bare weight. The calculator's input field is explicitly labelled Pounds per square foot (psf), and that labelling matters, because a bare number of pounds — someone's bodyweight, a box on a shipping scale — is a force, not a pressure, and cannot be converted to psi without first knowing the area it's pressing on. Enter a psf figure here, never a raw pound reading, or the result will describe a pressure that was never actually applied.

The relationship between the two units is pure geometry. One square foot contains exactly 144 square inches, since a foot is defined as 12 inches and 12 squared is 144. Any pressure quoted in pounds-force per square foot converts to pounds-force per square inch by dividing by 144 — equivalently, multiplying by 0.00694444444444, a fraction that repeats forever because 144 is not a power of ten. Neither unit involves the newton or any SI quantity directly; both stay entirely inside the pound-force family, which is why the arithmetic reduces to a clean whole-number ratio rather than anything drawn from a physical constant.

Worked example — a 500 psf warehouse floor rating

A warehouse mezzanine is designed to carry 500 psf of stored goods, a rating printed on the load plaque at the top of the stairs. Does this page convert my bodyweight in pounds into pressure?

No, and this is the single most important thing to understand about it. Bodyweight, a shipping-scale reading, or any bare number of pounds is a force, not a pressure, and a force cannot become a pressure without knowing the area it acts over. The input field is Pounds per square foot (psf), a pressure already divided by area — if you only have a raw pound figure, work out the square-foot area it presses on first, divide one by the other, and enter that psf result here.

Why does one psf equal such a small number of psi?

Because a square inch is tiny next to a square foot — 144 of them fit inside one square foot, since a foot is 12 inches on a side and 12 squared is 144. A car tyre commonly runs 30 to 35 psi, a figure that would look like an enormous 4,320 to 5,040 psf if quoted the other unit's way.
