How this instrument works

The stone began as an actual stone. Medieval markets kept a lump of rock beside the weighing beam as the local standard, and its mass depended on the goods: eight pounds to a stone of meat, five for glass, twelve for wax, fourteen for wool. Britain's Weights and Measures Act of 1835 ended that patchwork by legalising one value — fourteen avoirdupois pounds — and that is what every bathroom scale, saddle cloth and doctor's chart has meant by the word ever since.

Because fourteen is a whole number, this conversion carries no measurement uncertainty at all; it is division, not estimation. One pound is 1/14 stone, which in decimal form runs 0.0714285714285714… with the block 714285 repeating forever. Is a stone exactly 14 pounds?

Yes, and exactly is the right word — the relationship is a definition rather than a measurement. The 1835 Weights and Measures Act fixed the British stone at fourteen avoirdupois pounds, and since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement pegged the pound at 0.45359237 kilograms, one stone is exactly 6.35029318 kg. No experiment can sharpen those figures, because no experiment produced them.

Why does 160 lb show as 11.43 st instead of 11 stone 6?

Because a calculator returns one decimal number, and the part after the point counts fourteenths, not pounds. Multiply it by 14 to recover the pounds: 0.43 × 14 is roughly 6, giving 11 st 6 lb. Half a stone is 7 lb, a quarter is 3.5 lb, and 0.75 st is 10.5 lb — none of which resemble the decimals themselves, which is exactly why the habit of reading them as pounds goes wrong.
