Lumber weight is volume times density, and this calculator handles the volume half precisely using the PS-20 American Softwood Lumber Standard's actual dressed dimensions — a nominal 2×6, for instance, is really 1.5×5.5 inches once it's planed and dried, and the size dropdown here already reflects that real cross-section rather than the misleading nominal name.

Density is the variable that's genuinely uncertain, and it's left fully editable rather than hardcoded. Kiln-dried softwood framing lumber commonly runs somewhere between about 25 lb/ft³ (spruce-pine-fir, or SPF) and 38 lb/ft³ (denser species like Southern Yellow Pine), and moisture content shifts the number further still — lumber that hasn't fully dried weighs noticeably more than the same board once seasoned. The 32 lb/ft³ default here is a reasonable mid-range planning figure, not a species-specific fact about your actual lumber.

Knowing total lumber weight matters for real logistics decisions — trailer or vehicle payload limits, how many pieces a crew can safely carry at once, or shipping cost calculations that price by weight rather than board footage. Worked example — ten 8ft nominal 2×6 boards

Select nominal 2×6 (actual 1.5×5.5in, cross-section 8.25 sq in per PS-20), Length per piece to 8ft, Number of pieces to 10, and Lumber density to 32 lb/ft³, a mid-range kiln-dried-softwood planning figure. Weight per piece = (8.25 ÷ 144) × 8 × 32 = 14.667 lb; total weight = 14.667 × 10 = 146.67 lb.

Switch to a nominal 4×4 post (actual 3.5×3.5in, cross-section 12.25 sq in), 4 pieces at 16ft each, using a denser Southern-Yellow-Pine-range figure of 36 lb/ft³: weight per piece = (12.25 ÷ 144) × 16 × 36 = 49.0 lb; total weight = 49.0 × 4 = 196.0 lb — a heavier single-piece figure despite fewer pieces, since the post's larger cross-section and longer length outweigh having fewer boards.

Questions

What density should I use for kiln-dried framing lumber?

It depends on the species. Common framing species like spruce-pine-fir (SPF) run toward the lighter end, roughly 25-28 lb/ft³ kiln-dried, while denser species like Southern Yellow Pine can reach 35-38 lb/ft³ or more. The 32 lb/ft³ default here sits in the middle of that range as a general planning figure — if you know your lumber's specific species, look up its typical kiln-dried density for a more accurate weight estimate.

Does moisture content change lumber weight significantly?

Yes, meaningfully. Kiln-dried lumber is dried to a controlled moisture content, typically around 19% or less, but lumber that's still green or has reabsorbed moisture from humid storage can weigh noticeably more than the same board fully dried, sometimes 20-50% heavier depending on species and current wetness. If your lumber isn't kiln-dried or has been stored somewhere damp, use a higher density figure than the kiln-dried default to avoid underestimating weight.

Why does the calculator use PS-20 actual sizes instead of nominal sizes?

Because using the nominal size, 2 inches by 6 inches for a '2×6,' would overstate the true cross-sectional area and therefore the weight. Once a rough-sawn board is planed smooth and dried, its actual finished dimensions shrink to the PS-20 standard's dressed sizes, 1.5×5.5 inches for that same '2×6.' This calculator's dropdown already uses those real dimensions so the weight math reflects the lumber you'll actually be handling.

How is this useful for trailer or vehicle payload planning?

Multiply your planned lumber order's total weight using this calculator, then compare it against your trailer or vehicle's rated payload capacity, keeping in mind other cargo, passengers, and equipment also count against that limit. Because real lumber density varies with species and moisture, it's worth adding a reasonable safety margin rather than loading right up to a calculated maximum, especially for a species or moisture condition you're not fully certain about.

Does this calculator work for pressure-treated lumber?

The formula itself does, but pressure-treated lumber is meaningfully heavier than the same untreated species due to retained treatment chemicals and the higher moisture content typical of treated stock straight from the yard, often noticeably above the kiln-dried density figures used for untreated framing lumber. If you're weighing treated lumber, use a higher density input, checked against a treated-lumber-specific reference if precision matters, rather than this calculator's untreated-softwood default.
