How this instrument works
A man-hour is one worker's labor for one hour; total man-hours is the sum of every hour every person on a job contributes, added together regardless of who worked when. The formula multiplies three figures — crew size, hours each person puts in per day, and the number of days the job runs — because man-hours measures total labor exertion, not a schedule: five people working one day and one person working five days both spend the same 40 man-hours, even though the calendar time is entirely different.
General contractors and estimators total man-hours before a bid goes out, because it is the labor-content figure a job needs regardless of which crew ends up doing it — multiply the total by an hourly wage afterward to price the work, or compare it against a competing bid's man-hour count to see who is estimating the job as bigger or smaller. Safety officers use the same total hours worked as the denominator in incident-rate formulas, since an injury count only means something once it is scaled against how much labor exposure produced it. Manufacturing and logistics teams divide output by man-hours to benchmark productivity across shifts or plants that run different crew sizes and different lengths of day.
The multiplication is exact, but the equivalence it implies is not. Ten workers finishing in half the days of five workers produces the identical man-hour total, yet job sites are rarely that substitutable — a cramped space fits only so many trades at once, new hands need supervision before they add net output, and coordination overhead grows with headcount in a way the formula cannot see. Total man-hours also carries no wage, no safety weighting and no measure of how hard any particular hour was; it is a labor-time total, not a cost, a productivity score or a risk figure, and treating it as any of those is where estimates go wrong.

Worked example — a 5-worker, 5-day job
Set Number of workers to 5, Hours per worker per day to 8, and Number of days to 5 — a small crew working standard eight-hour days across a five-day week. The instrument multiplies 5 times 8 times 5 and returns Total man-hours of 200, the figure a contractor would carry into a bid before applying an hourly rate.
The same 200 total would come from 10 workers over a 2.5-day sprint, or one person alone across 25 working days — the multiplication treats every combination as equal, though a job site rarely does. Coordination costs, overlapping trades and limited floor space usually mean crew size and schedule length are not perfect substitutes for each other, even when the arithmetic says they are.

In practice the trade is rarely free: cramped work sites hold only so many people at once, new hands slow a crew before they speed it up, and coordination cost climbs with headcount in ways this total does not capture.
Why do safety officers track total man-hours?
Standard workplace injury-rate formulas divide the number of recordable incidents by total hours worked, then scale the result to a common base — commonly 200,000 hours, roughly what 100 full-time employees work in a year — so sites of different sizes can be compared on equal footing. Total man-hours is that denominator; without it, a raw injury count says nothing about how much labor exposure produced it.
Does the formula assume every worker works identical hours?
Yes — this sheet applies one uniform Hours per worker per day figure across the whole crew and every day entered. A job where some people work full shifts and others work half days needs those groups totalled separately, or averaged carefully, since folding an uneven schedule into a single hours-per-worker number will over- or understate the true total.
What does a typical man-hours figure look like?
Scale runs from single digits to millions depending on the job: a two-person weekend repair might total 32 man-hours, the five-worker week in the example above totals 200, and a large commercial build can run past a million man-hours across its full schedule. There is no universal benchmark — the number only means something next to the specific job it was estimated for.
