How this instrument works

Millimetre and kilometre sit one thousand-step from the metre in opposite directions, and their prefixes were deliberately built from different languages. France's decimal measures law of 1795 drew sub-multiple prefixes from Latin and multiples from Greek, so milli- descends from mille and kilo- from khilioi, both of which mean a thousand. Multiply those two thousands together and one kilometre holds 1,000,000 millimetres. Both prefixes also sit on the thousand-step ladder that SI style guides prefer, which is why mm, m and km dominate technical work while centimetres and decimetres get skipped.

That factor of a million is why this particular pair keeps turning up in precision work: one millimetre in one kilometre is, by arithmetic, one part per million. Surveyors reading total-station specifications written as ±(2 mm + 2 ppm) know instantly that over one kilometre of baseline both terms land in millimetres — two from instrument electronics, two more from scale error. Rail and bridge engineers lean on the same shortcut, since steel expands by roughly 11.7 ppm per degree, meaning each kilometre of continuously welded rail grows about 11.7 mm for every degree Celsius it warms. Geodetic levelling tolerances are written the same way, as millimetres times the square root of distance in kilometres.

Day to day, though, these two units keep separate company. Millimetres own technical drawing, where mechanical dimensions are given in mm with no symbol printed at all, and they carry machining tolerances, fastener pitches, lens focal lengths, cartridge calibres and rainfall depth. Kilometres own road signs, odometers, map scales, survey chainage and race distances. Conversions crossing six orders of magnitude in one hop normally involve machine counters, cable or pipe runs, or units slips — and slips here are almost always one stray factor of 1,000, from stopping at metres and calling it finished.

Worked example — a survey calibration baseline

Survey crews check total stations against calibration baselines, logging raw distance exactly as the instrument reports it, in whole millimetres. One such reading is 1000000. Enter that in the Millimetres (mm) field and the Kilometres (km) line returns 1.0 — one kilometre on the nose, six zeros traded for the decimal point.

Now read that instrument's accuracy specification, ±(2 mm + 2 ppm). Across this distance the proportional term is two parts per million of a kilometre, which is two millimetres, so the whole error budget comes to four millimetres — 0.000004 km. Halve the baseline to 500000 mm and you get 0.5 km, with that scale term halving to 1 mm alongside it.

Questions

How many millimetres are in one kilometre?

Exactly 1,000,000 — a definitional count, never a measured one. Take it in two steps of 1,000: that many millimetres make one metre, and that many metres make one kilometre, so 1,000 × 1,000 = 1,000,000. Turned around, a single millimetre is 0.000001 km, which is where factor 1e-06 comes from. Both units are decimal prefixes hung on one base unit, so this count is fixed and cannot drift.

Is the 1e-06 factor exact, or has it been rounded?

Exact, carrying no uncertainty at all. 1e-06 is compact notation for ten raised to minus six — one millionth. It expresses a ratio between two SI prefixes, settled by definition rather than by any laboratory comparison. That makes it exact in a stronger sense than 1 in = 25.4 mm, which is also exact but only because six standards bodies agreed to fix it in 1959; prefix ratios were never open to negotiation.

Is one millimetre per kilometre really one part per million?

Yes, precisely. Parts per million express the ratio 1e-06, and one millimetre divided by one kilometre is 1e-06 by definition, so those two expressions are interchangeable. This is why distance-measuring instruments, GNSS baseline solutions and thermal expansion coefficients all get quoted in ppm: along a kilometre of line, every ppm you are quoted costs you one millimetre. It lets you add an error budget in your head.

Why do drawings use millimetres while site plans use kilometres?

Because each unit sits at a scale where its numbers stay legible. Mechanical drafting practice fixes millimetres as the default dimension unit and normally omits the symbol from a drawing entirely, so a hole marked 12.5 needs no explanation. Distances along a road, railway or pipeline get chained in kilometres for that same reason — writing a 42 km alignment as 42,000,000 mm would bury every useful digit. Both units are fully legal SI; they simply serve different magnitudes.

Do Americans use millimetres and kilometres?

Millimetres, constantly. US manufacturing, machining, firearms and photography all run on them, which is why 9 mm ammunition, a 50 mm lens and M8 fasteners need no translation. Kilometres see much less use: races are sold as a 5K or 10K and scientific work is metric throughout, but road signs, speed limits and odometers stay in miles. Neither unit belongs to imperial or US customary systems, though both link to them exactly, since an inch has been 25.4 mm since 1959.

Why is my answer out by a factor of a thousand?

Nearly always because only one of two thousand-steps got applied. Going from millimetres to kilometres needs a division by 1,000 to reach metres and a second division by 1,000 to reach kilometres — 1,000,000 in total. Stopping after that first division leaves an answer a thousand times too large. Another frequent slip is reading micrometres as millimetres, μm against mm, which throws a result out by yet another thousand. Two quick anchors: 1,000,000 mm is 1 km, and 1,000 mm is 0.001 km.
