How this instrument works
Milli- is defined as one exact power of ten. SI fixes it at 10⁻³, so every millimetre is one thousandth of its parent metre by construction, and the figure 0.001 carries no uncertainty whatsoever. That matters more than it sounds: the metre has been redefined four times since 1791, yet not one of those revisions could disturb this ratio, because millimetres were never an independent standard — merely shorthand for one thousandth of whatever the metre currently is.
