How this instrument works

Total weight is simply the number of bills multiplied by the weight of a single bill. The only real input worth getting right is that second number: the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing states that every US paper currency note, regardless of denomination, weighs approximately one gram. A stack of a thousand one-dollar bills and a stack of a thousand hundred-dollar bills therefore weigh the same, even though one is worth one hundred times more than the other.

That single fact makes this calculator handy for more than trivia. It's the same arithmetic used to estimate how heavy a bank deposit bag, a cash register drawer, or a stack of bills counted for a cash-handling procedure will be, and it's the calculation behind the classic 'how much would a million dollars weigh' question — the honest answer depends entirely on which denomination fills the stack, since fewer, larger-value notes always weigh less for the same dollar total.

The one-gram figure is specific to US paper currency's cotton-linen blend; it is not universal. Many other countries print polymer banknotes that weigh noticeably differently per note, and coins obviously don't follow this rule at all — the Weight per bill field is editable precisely so the same formula can be reused for a different note's actual weight rather than assuming every currency behaves like the US dollar.

Worked example — 1,000 one-dollar bills

Enter 1,000 for Number of bills and leave Weight per bill at its 1.0 g default, the approximate weight the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing states for any US note regardless of denomination. Total weight comes to 1,000 × 1.0 = 1,000.0 grams — about one kilogram, or roughly 2.2 pounds, for a stack of a thousand one-dollar bills.

Because every US note weighs about the same, that same 1,000-gram figure applies to a thousand hundred-dollar bills too — $100,000 weighing exactly what $1,000 weighs. Push the count further, to a million bills at one gram each, and the total reaches 1,000,000 grams: 1,000 kilograms, or roughly a metric ton, the classic trivia figure often cited for a million one-dollar bills.

Questions

Do all US bills really weigh the same regardless of denomination?

Yes — the Bureau of Engraving and Printing states that the approximate weight of a US paper currency note is about one gram, whether it's a $1 bill or a $100 bill, since all denominations are printed on the same cotton-linen paper stock at the same size and thickness. Value has nothing to do with weight for US currency; only the count of notes and the size of each note matter.

How much would $1 million actually weigh?

It depends entirely on the denomination. In $100 bills, $1 million is 10,000 notes, which at about 1 gram each comes to roughly 10,000 grams — 10 kilograms, or about 22 pounds, easily carried in a duffel bag. The same $1 million in $1 bills is 1,000,000 notes, weighing roughly 1,000 kilograms — about a metric ton — which is why movie depictions of a briefcase full of low-denomination cash worth millions are usually physically impossible.

Does this formula work for coins or foreign banknotes?

Only if you change the Weight per bill field to that item's actual weight. The 1.0 g default is specific to US paper currency; US coins weigh far more per unit (a quarter is about 5.67 g), and many other countries print polymer banknotes with a different mass than US notes. The multiplication itself, count times unit weight, still applies — just supply the correct unit weight first.

Why does the Bureau of Engraving and Printing publish a bill's weight at all?

It's practical information for currency handling, shipping, and quality control at the scale a national mint operates on — banks, armored-transport companies, and the Federal Reserve system all need to estimate the bulk weight of cash shipments, and a consistent per-note weight makes that estimate a simple multiplication rather than a manual weigh-in for every shipment.

Is a bill's weight the same as its thickness or size?

Related but not identical. US notes are all printed to the same 2.61 by 6.14 inch dimensions and are close enough in thickness that weight, size and thickness move together for practical purposes, which is part of why a fixed per-note weight works well as an estimate. Heavy wear, moisture, or ink buildup can shift an individual note's actual weight slightly, but not by enough to matter for stacks of any real size.
