How this instrument works
Morse code represents each character as a sequence of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes), originally designed for telegraph operators to tap out messages over a single wire using nothing but timing. The version in use today, International Morse Code (formally standardized as ITU-R M.1677-1), covers the 26 Latin letters A-Z and the digits 0-9, plus punctuation and prosigns not covered by this instrument.
The code wasn't assigned randomly.
